disks: and where did that lead you? back to me.

The problem with cds and blurays wasn't even the storage capacity. People didn’t like them because of how easily small scratches could cause you to lose that data. Hard drives were a lot more secure.

You break one disk, and potentially lose so much data. I love it

the thing i hate is that every time storage becomes more affordable/efficient, everything suddenly starts taking up more storage.

Can't wait for them to put them into a square of hard plastic for protection, reinventing the floppy disk.

If you are old enough you will remember how reliable CDs were...

This is really interesting because she’s calling it the wrong thing, but she’s right about the measurement. One petabit IS 125 terabytes, but she’s showing an image of a graph that says petabyte. It’s also 10, 000 times as dense, 120 mm, it’s been expected for well over a decade, and it’s not set to be commercially available for like twenty years. It’ll also probably be expensive and there will likely be other forms of better ways to store things by then.

Imagine scratching it, there goes 100GB of data.

Hearing someone say a CD doesn't store much data actually wrenched my back a bit. CDs held a TREMENDOUS amount of data in their day, ~700MB, in a time when not everyone was using 1.44MB floppies yet.

one correction; blu-rays hold between 25gb and 125gb. So saying between 5gb and 8gb, that refereed only to dvds.

With the way companies are now, I prefer having something I can actually hold in my hands.

Man do I want DvDs to make the same comeback that vinyls did, it's getting impossible to collect them because no new movies/series are being made into them

I never thought the size of call of duty could get any bigger, but they’ll figure out how to fill up and entire disc

A petabyte and a petabit are not the same thing. Also a petabyte is worth 1024 terabytes.

The use of Keanu Reeves really helped me understand the equivalence between terabytes and petabytes.

The really good thing about this tech is being able to get 4k uncompressed movies on a single disk with zero problem. This is where they will shine!

Everybody gangsta until there's a tiny scratch on that disk

Every day I pray for the return of physical media. This gives me hope.
