I've often seen it as mythology explaining the big questions (where we come from, the weather, what happens when we die) and folklore answers more local smaller questions (what's eating our sheep, what's in that cave, etc)

In my own personal opinion folklore is an umbrella term to emcompass traditional oral stories and mythology is a category within folklore along with legends, ballads, sagas, epic poetry, fables, fairy tales, nursery rhymes, tall tales, etc.

So in a sense mythology has direction while folklore has none technically, am I getting that right?

Very interesting! Well explained! I think that neither kind of storytelling is better than the other. They are both proofs of the large imagination of humans and they realy contribute to build the cultures.

for what i understand about folklore, it's a story ( lore ) pass down from generation to generation that belongs to certain part of a group ( folk )
which mean folklore is more like a general term or "genre" for any story that belong to certain culture or group of people such as tales, myth, legends, epics and ballads
.
so a term mythogy, legend etc is more like a sub-genre of folktales. it's make more sense since a story about gods and divinity still is part of certain part of group or "folk" that are passed down through generation.

Cover Mythology versus Religion. Many would be surprised to find that they are basically the same. At one point, what we know today to be Mythology was Religion.

This is a common thing I say, but mythological stories and folk tales also tend to share the purpose of being moral guidance. For example, how many stories in Greek myth are about a mortal who disrespects the gods and gets punished? That is moral guidance. Most folk tales tell stories that are also moral guidance - Little Red Riding Hood should not wander off the path, Cinderella was a good person where her step-mother and step-sister were not, the Little Mermaid gives up her life honourably and is rewarded, not to mention a huge trove of "Three siblings, youngest encounters something magical and gets a reward, elder two chase after rewards and get punished" stories.

But like you say on the scale issue, I think a lot of folk tales tend to be smaller scale, teaching lessons about things that were obvious parts of life, instead of the somewhat more pie-in-the-sky concept of "Don't disrespect the gods".
