ok a few things:
1. holy shit i did not expect this video to blow up. thank you guys so much for all the support and for all the kind words AND subscribers??? you guys are insane and it means the world thank you!!!
2. reading thru various hate comments really has me doubling over in laughter, mostly because they’re not even directed towards me - i am unfortunately not a member of fall out boy and therefore did not make this song or it’s lyrics. but seeing how polarising it is has definitely been interesting!
3. balloon boy is not a reference to fnaf as much as you’d all like it to be
4. no this video isn’t ai generated - i made this on the train to and from uni class lol. think it would’ve been easier using ai but i’m not rly interested in using that stuff
5. my next video will be fob related in some way so please stick around for that if you’d like!

once again thank you guys - it’s crazy to know so many people have so many things to say about something i’m apart of somehow 😅

I think this should be a thing. Every 20 years a new artist updates this song since things really just keep getting worse. Edit. Wow you all so desperate for attention like 20 people just have to comment "30 years" to feel special.

The one difference between this song and the original is the subtle difference of “No, we didn’t light it, but we *tried* to fight it” versus “We are *trying* to fight it”. I think it shows the mentality of the two different generations of artists who wrote both songs.

Ending this with 9/11 I think perfectly encapsulates that feeling of “the 90s were wild but after 9/11 everything just got more fked”

Now I know why my parents were so in love with the original version. Being alive through all the events in this version makes it hit so hard to me.

I grew up with Billy Joel's original. It blows me away now in my 30's to hear it updated to reflect my generation's story and struggles.

The fact that Fall Out Boy mentioned the Black Parade is such an amazing thing to me. It really did have that much of an impact on an entire generation.

If Fall Out Boy had waited just a little longer, they could have had the line, "England's got a new king."

Edit: I think people are misunderstanding my intention lol. Yes, you can add any number of events to the song. But the original song says "England's got a new queen." They released the song a month after King Charles' coronation. They could have paid homage to the original song by saying "England's got a new king".

The line “World Trade, second plane, what else do I have to say?” is amazing in itself but adding your imagery hit much harder and brought me to tears. Thank you for this!

Now I understand what my dad felt when he first heard the original. Having lived through all of this very surreal.

It's killing me that they didn't write the lyrics to go year-by-year, but I absolutely smiled at 1:35 when they got "Suez" in there.

Being in my 40's and being a kid when the original came out and hearing the past 30 or so years just shows how much has changed and happened in such a short time.

What’s really cool is the double meaning of “Prince and the Queen dies” line because it can refer to both the royal family and the singers. Plus when you keep the original version in mind where Billy Joel mentions “Englands got a new Queen” then listen to the new version where the Queen dies. It just brings us full circle and shows how quickly time moves.

The plus side to it not being in chronological order is that every single line hits differently, but in a like takes-my-breath-away type. I also love Pete's explanation of how the last 30 years have been a blur.

Edit: to everyone in my comments please shut up about how it's lazy writing and that fall out boy made the mistake of it not being in chronological order. Go make your own comment instead of going under mine, and you might not want to make it in this comment section, bc this is a fan edit, not the official video. The band has their reasons for not making it in chronological order, and they ARE NOT trying to sound like yhe original or Billy Joel, they are trying to sound like fall out boy. They spent over 2 years on this, it's not lazy writing. I think it sounds better like this, so that's why I commented this.

30 years from now someone will re-re-remake this song again, and it will still be relevant. We change nothing because we aren't willing to sacrifice everything.

I feel like you could make a whole new song twice as long with just the events from the past 3 years.

In the age of social media fast content induced adhd, the fact that these events are not in chronological order makes sense and perfectly depicts this generation.

The only true downside is the not chronological order thing.

I know most people probably don’t care. But that’s truly what makes “We Didn’t Start The Fire”. Hell, it’s Billy Joel’s least favorite songs because it’s actually nothing musically speaking, but he meticulously put the events in order.

But, I digress, you put the video together well!

Being alive through all these events makes me realize how my history is so much like what my parents went through, but so different at the same time.

Found this by accident and fell in love. It's chaotic, lists events that I actually remember, and is just an overall masterpiece. FOB was on point with this, and your vid made it even better. Thank you!
