To make things even more tragic… in the phone call home, before being told the awful news, he said “Tell her she’d be proud of me.” So he spends his final moments giving Jyn the comfort he never received himself.

I just had a major realization about this scene that has left me stunned. There is more to this scene than just the death of his mother. Once again, in one of the most important moments of his life, Cassian is staring into the sunlight. When as a child, on Maarva's ship as she was rescuing him from his homeworld. When, on Luthen's ship, as he was rescuing Cassian from the Corpos on Ferrix. And here after he found out his mother had died. These moments, all staring into the sunlight, are mirrored with his death scene in Rogue One. His final moments of life has him in his girl's arms staring at the Deathstar's explosion approaching him on the beach. JUST LIKE ALL THE SUNLIGHTS BEFORE. It's like the sunlight is Cassian's destiny shining on him. I'm in awe of the writing here. Brilliantly poignant stuff.
