Making nitroglycerin

In this video I’ll be using chemistry to make nitroglycerin a useful heart medication and explosive. First 30 milliliters of sulfuric acid is added to a test tube along with 10 milligrams of potassium nitrate. Once cooled down to 0 degrees Celsius the glycerin is added.

i have a few tips for this procedure- 1. dont use an ice bath, the reaction works best at 20 degrees celcius, just make sure to stir it and wait between additions, the temp for nitroglycerin to explode is over 224, so there is not much danger. 2. if you have any, use fuming nitric acid instead of a nitrate salt or azeotropic acid, this will ensure you get the trinitroglycerin instead of the di or mono.
