DON'T DOUBT THE APPLE MAN

With Apple's new Vision Pro coming out next year, I want to take a moment to address some of the criticisms and memes about the Apple Vision Pro. I think the haters are WRONG and despite some of the notable flaws, Vision Pro is going to be a defining technology, a new frontier in tech. Want proof? Look no further than the iPhone.

Only one thing I can't get wrong is I can't afford it.

The other major difference between this and the iPhone, is that everybody used a phone and almost everyone had a cell phone. The iPhone was a new version of it but it was replacing a very common almost universal device. The same cannot be said for VR/AR. This is trying to create a basically new type of device that the masses will use. Currently VR/AR headsets are minute minority of the population.,

Still have my black iPhone SE (1st gen) (which uses the same body shell as the iPhone 5), I no longer use it as my daily driver, but I simply can't say good bye to the thing, I am just keeping it for sentimental reasons - it still looks so gorgeous!

I loved the 5, but REALLY loved the 5S to get the fingerprint ID.

a floating video screen that costs $3.5k and means you have to wear a ski mask to see it...I just don't see how this ever works out well for apple

Love that the Ebay listing says "unlocked" since they were made only for AT&T but now AT&T won't let anything older than a 6S on their network.

I don't think they got it wrong, but I do not think an isolating device that will be very useful will be the new iPhone. I think it has many uses, but it will not be an all purpose device. Most people will not walk around with them on all the time, like they look at their phone. Also the ability to quickly pull out a phone from a pocket will not be replaced by having to haul out a device from a backpack and put it on your head.

The way that the gestures work and windows can be placed spatially gives off the same kind of awe I know I experienced when seeing scrolling on iPhone for the first time. And the price (amongst other things) is very reminiscent of the og Macintosh.

The first commercially available radios at the turn of the 20th century cost around $120, more than $1, 000 today. The first CD player in 1982 cost about $1, 000. That's $3, 151 today. The first black-and-white televisions in the 1950s cost $250. That's $2, 837 today. The first color TV in 1953 cost $1, 175. That's $13, 061 today. The first microwaves of the 1970s cost as much as a new car. And a current Mac Studio with M2 Ultra, 1TB of storage, and 64GB of RAM starts at $3, 999 and doesn't come with a screen, let alone 23 million pixels across two displays, spatial audio, onboard three-dimensional camera, or eye-tracking interface. The Vision Pro costs $500 *less* than that. For a first-generation product, I'd say it's a remarkable achievement.

I had just moved back to the US, on the day of the original iPhone launch. But I got too lazy and got the Moto Razor, which was free if you activated one line on the new AT&T which was originally Cingular. Since I moved back to the US, I needed cell phone service. So, other family members got Moto Razors. Next day I went to the new AT&T store and wanted the 4 GB version, but they ran out but the 8 GB version was available, so I bought that. I had gotten every other phone (new one, skip it and next new one buy it). So, If I look back, I had the 5S, I skipped the 5. My wife kept saying she doesn't need an iPhone the Razor was fine. The 6S comes out and I bought two, one for her and one for me. I haven't been able to separate her from the phone. But that all stopped for quire a while. Our kids needed them. They actually needed them for school. So, two private school tuitions (no volume discount) which included iPads. So, my kids got iPads before me. Most of their homework was done on the iPads. The school kept very strict control of the iPads and every year they got new iPads as soon as they turned in their previous iPads. Anything not absolutely required by my wife and I, we had to do without. The tuition was killer, every year the price of a BMW went into tuition and fees. I still can't buy much because two kids went to private universities, Luckily our daughter graduated from college and now she is working and wants her masters and our son will graduate from college this next school year and he said he will pay for his own masters, so we told our daughter that she had to pay for her masters on her own. She worked out some kind of deal with her employer who will pay it. So, one more year and I should recover, and there is no student debt. So, I absolutely do not want to pay some strangers' loans since my family had none. I paid two mortgages and two sets of tuition. My children are debt free. MacBook Air is now 10 years old.

I bought in with the iPhone 4. A great device that started my Apple journey. I don't use it any more, but when I checked it a few months ago, it still worked (and with its original battery)! Then I got the iPhone 5. An even better device, BUT ... the battery on that one didn't last so well. In fact, the battery became swollen and lifted the screen off (but despite that, the phone can still be powered up). My partner had the same problem with the iPhone 5. I replaced mine with the iPhone7 Plus, which has lasted for years and which I still have as a backup for my iPhone 14 Pro Max.

Imagining a subway full of virtual eyes starring at and through me… the stuff of nightmares. Could happen… currently they are all holding a smartphone.

The thing is you're only pointing out press/competitor skepticism. At the time, the cell phone/"smart" phone market was pretty complacent, so I think the idea of shunning out disruptors was to be expected. However I recall average consumers being pretty excited and curious about it. I really dont feel that same level of enthusiasm here outside of the tech bubble. But also the keynote itself was the reason people were hyped for the original iPhone and the way that was presented vs the Vision Pro were so vastly different.

Steve Jobs' presentation gave us a story, going through what the average iPhone user *will* do with their device, how it is easily integrated into their daily lives and such. It didnt really matter that it was missing features that other phones had or that the experience was pretty bare bones to what it is now, they sold you completely on what it was capable of doing at the time. I still remember 2007 me having a lot of fun with the iPhone and my peers were blown away too. And that experience only spread more with the iPod touch. The Vision Pro presentation by comparison was filled with a lot "what if's" and "maybe someday's", which honestly is a huge red flag. I don't think most people got a clear idea of how this could be a part of their lives because it was so all over the place and filled with too many hypotheticals. Is it for the average Joe? the power user? Enterprise?? It feels like they're trying to sell you on a concept vs an actual real experience.

And back to the iPod touch actually, I personally believe that is what really sold the iPhone experience as a whole as it brought it to an even larger audience within just a few months of the original iPhone launch. The Vision Pro is EXTREMELY out of reach for many people and the idea of there being an """affordable""" option is only speculation at the moment. This will not be some big shared experience amongst the masses. Some people have pointed out that the Vision Pro presentation came off as very cold and isolating. And if you're one of the few people that manages to buy one of these, thats probably what its going to feel like.

I had many cell-/smartphones before my 1st gen iPhone. I don’t have a VR/AR-headset. That is at least a big difference between iPhone and Vision Pro for many I believe.

The 5S in my opinion. The Touch ID instead of the traditional home button looks better. My 2nd iPhone was the 5 like yours. the white 4S was my 1st.

I’m personally excited for future versions of Vision Pro, definitely not getting the launch model at that price without reading some thorough reviews, but I think it’s a pretty bold step nonetheless

I started with the 3g. Had to wait for my Verizon contract to end so I could switch to att. After using my moms iPhone 2g to navigate using maps, I was glad I had to wait. Since then I’ve had the 4, 4s (yay Siri!), 5s, 6, X and now 12 pro max. I’m excited to see where vision pro goes. I hope I get to try one out next year.

Since february i own a PSVR2 Headset. It was my very first encounter with this type of device. Now it is July and i can‘t wait to enter space again with Red Matter 2! At age 52 i have a blast spending time in „other worlds“. Vision Pro will be a GIANT SUCCESS. 🏆
