Here’s a really HOT Django lick that you can use over E7.

It comes from his epic 1937 ‘Minor Swing’ solo and sounds super-cool!

What’s even cooler is understanding the concept behind this lick

In a nutshell even though Django plays it over E7, the lick is all about B minor.

So this means that essentially anything you can play over B minor will work over E7.

Use this lick to get that gypsy sound in your solos!

For best results use the B minor Pentatonic & Dorian scales -

Hi Robin, thanks for that tip! A really interesting concept! So I can use the minor scale and the minor pentatonic scale over the corresponding dominant 7 chord to this minor chord... Wow! I will try that.

I think this works because Bm is the ii of the ii-V in the key of Am (which would look like [Bm7-E7]). Somewhere, I think I learned some time ago that in any ii-V you can play through those changes by omitting the ii and just playing a V lick or by omitting the V and just playing a ii lick. Am I making sense? :-) Now I wish I could always implement these ideas as fast as I can say them... :-( You can see that a Bm7 chord played at the 7th fret looks a lot like an E9 chord played at the 6th fret (with a one-note difference).
