5 Easy Django Licks On 'Minor Swing' (1947 Solo)

In this cool new video I'll show you some easy Django licks that he used in his classic 1947 solo on 'Minor Swing'.

As always there is much to learn from Django's solo lines.

BUT it’s my job to show you what will work for you so that you won't have to shred or spend endless hours practicing tricky licks :-)

In this video you'll learn 5 of his tasty licks from the beginning of that 1947 solo.

Lick 1 - This is a call which is answered in Lick 2 and starts on a nice bend up to the B (9th of Am)

Lick 2 - The first lick is answered again starting with the same bend to the B but coming down the A minor harmonic scale which fits nicely over E7

Lick 3 - This is Django’s lick for playing over E7. He uses a Bm6 idea which is good to know.

Lick 4 - A classic ending lick this wraps up the minor sound

Lick 5 - Bouncing off the top E string is a great way to play over A minor and Django rocks it with this lick!

Take these licks and play them in your own way. Absorb the sound into your playing.

Have fun and If you’d like me to help you take your guitar playing to the next level then come checkout 'The Club' Opening on Saturday 21st September!

Nice deja vu from my first Gypsy Jazz Secrets Retreat. Interesting how Django was heading towards bebop in the latter part of his career.

Very cool, Robin! This kind of teaching is so good. For sure there are some very difficult things in that kind of music. But there are many many easy parts that one can learn with a metronome and a little bit of practice.

Hi Robin, fan and follower and purchaser of your #4 songbook...you're a great teacher and very generous. I do have one observation about your short offerings on YouTube: have you considered using a looper, so we can hear the lick right away against the changes?? It seems the relationship between the line and the harmonic context would be much easier to grasp... What do you think? Rock on!

Great! would you write the chords progression of the backing track? Thanks

So over dominant chords you can play a minor based on the 5th degree of the chord, or a diminished based on the 3rd degree of the chord?

Example: over C7: play E diminished or G minor?

Man that’s hip so that B minor over E seven is functioning like a 9 cord and mixo.
