As author Norman Solomon writes in his new book 'War Made Invisible: How America Hides the Human Toll of the Military Machine,' "America has been conditioned to accept ongoing wars without ever really knowing what they’re doing to people we’ll never see." TRNN Editor-in-Chief Maximillian Alvarez speaks with Solomon about his book, the political crisis that decades of invisible war have generated in US domestic politics, and how images of the ongoing carnage in Gaza have exposed the horrors of war that the US worked to make invisible in the post-9/11 era.

'm almost 76, and I was a young adult during the Vietnam War. I was among the kids protesting against the war, and I remember the frustration and rage we felt when we couldn't end the war as it dragged on year after year. But eventually the military itself was forced to end it, Israel is being destroyed by this war, though no one in the mainstream media will report on this, but hundreds of thousands of Israeli citizens have left their country, and Israel is becoming hard-pressed to provide enough soldiers for its ever-widening war. Its economy is being eaten alive by the war. Israel is a pariah in a large part of the world. Its people are overwhelmingly in favor of ending the war, though not for the same reasons that we want it. And this is just after one year. I hate to say it, but we need to have some perspective on this--and I know how impossible that is given what we are witnessing. But having witnessed year after year of atrocity in the Vietnam War year after year, and then to witness the same year after year in South Africa, I know that it takes time for the cumulative effect of any movement to create change. Please don't give up! We have made progress over the last year. If Kamala wins (a big if) we will have the space for pushing our agenda further.
