What If Chicken Run Had Smoother Stop-Motion?

What if Chicken Run had smoother stop-motion animation? I used an AI program to interpolate the scene to a higher frame rate and added a bit of extra motion blur as well.

What do you think of the results?

NOTE: Please watch at 720p or above to get 60 fps and the full effect.

Let me know if you think if the smooth stop-motion looks better in the comments down below!

Smoother stop-motion feels nice. But the original, typical stop-motion 24 framerate has a charm that no smooth animation can replicate.

loved this movie as a child definitely watched it over 100 times easily with so many other films.

While the enhancement looks cool, I like the classic stop-motion look and feel.

The smoothness doesn't really suit the character animations, but some objects like the gate look fantastic. It would be interesting to see a movie like this where the characters and environmental objects are animated at different framerates. I've never known that to be done outside of Spiderverse, and that's CG.

I don't think the original needed any help. Outstanding work by the creators.

Nah. The orignal look and feel is iconic. Never fuck with what made you a success in the first place.

I'd be more interested to see what the 120 fps version looks like when converted back to 24 fps.

whoever “smoothed” the animation clearly has a lot of technical skill and its done really well, but i personally much prefer the original, the sorta “choppiness” of it just adds so much charm and character that the new one just doesn’t have

There's a reason why the standard for stop motion is 24fps, imagine if the artist had to take 120 manual photos instead of 24

You gotta admit, having AI Frame Interpolation just makes it a little cursed at the same time looks buttery smooth.

Whilst it's interesting to see what it looks like and you've done an amazing job with it, I think I prefer the stop motion to look like stop motion because that's what it's meant to look like.
I don't know if you've already done it but taking a pass at some of the scenes from the 1st Terminator or Robocop could be really interesting as they're meant to look realistic rather than stop motion

The smoother stop motion is really cool, but there is something about the originals that can't be replaced. The edits don't quite seem to mesh with the actual clay and sets they built.

I love how the Original looks better than the AI frame interpolation

The interpolated image looks lifeless. It's like a stiff and robotic, but also liquid, motion. It's cool you can do this these days but it also just kills the original motion. I think it's because the animators intentionally choose how many frames are between each image but the interpolated image just fills in all those blanks and removes all of the exagerration entirely. Again, it's cool tech, but it looks awful.

The point of stop-motion was to achieve this look through the pain of handcrafted rigging. By tweening frames with software, the end product is only marginally better but undercuts the process. If stopmo studios in the future do this to smooth out their work then it'll be their decision, but I loved the charm of the clunky low fps animation that still got the message across.

This movie holds a special place in my heart. My grandfather gave it to me before I moved state because I liked it when I watched it with him once, and I still have it. He always asks me about it on the phone :)

Interesting how the higher FPS almost seems to bring attention to the choppiness of the motion more in some ways, because it glides and stops between movements rather than just jumping

It’s very interesting to see what Chicken Run could have looked like and I thank you for sharing it. May the blessings of Jesus lead you to Him.

You lose the artistic intent doing this though. It'd be interesting to see it animated by Aardman themselves at 60fps for sure, but just via computer interpolation, it makes it robotic and stiff, as the interpolated frames don't have any easing. At the end of the day, 24/12 or 30/15 fps is great for stop motion for a reason. But it is interesting to see!

the thumbnail has to be the funniest thing I have seen lol

showing the same frame twice but saying one is less fps is actually so funny
