My son had two Leghorns named Flame and Torch, named after Minecraft torches and the fact that Minecraft had swimming chickens. Torch and Flame were loved and lived a life of love, companionship, comfort, and luxury for chickens. Torch is the star of this video.
My son would stay with them after school and on the weekends in his free time. He would do his homework, play guitar with them, read to them and play ball with them. He raised live crickets (by the thousands) and hand-fed them to his chickens. He would take care of them if they got sick. They often stayed in the house if he felt they were threatened in any way. They did not run from us, they would follow us around the yard and would not react if you pet, hugged, or picked them up. When we came outside, they would run up to us. Even our dog was loved by the chickens. The chickens were also loved by my son.
For those concerned about the pool water somehow being poisonous to an animal. The pool is a low salt pool, well maintained, and has 2-4 parts per billion of 'free chlorine' created from the sodium chloride (NaCl) or salt. We do not put chlorine in the pool, we also do not shock the pool with chlorine as it is not a heavy use pool. You can even drink pool water but it is suggested that you boil or filter it to remove bacteria, not because of chlorine.
As for drowning, chickens can drown in less than 1 inch of water which is why you have special water troughs in the coop that limit their ability to get their head underwater. We were very careful in checking to see if she could swim. Do not ever let chickens have access to bodies of water without supervision.
Hypothermia is not a concern either as we live in south Florida. It doesn't get cold here, even in the winter.
