The Lachrimae Pavan on Lute

The famous Lachrimae Pavan performed here on the instrument for which it was written, the Renaissance Lute. First published around 1595 in England. Here I'm playing from the Jane Pickering manuscript but have added some nice ideas from other English manuscripts. Composer: John Dowland (1563-1626).

I don’t know what is more tasteful, the playing or the slick hairstyle

Damn that's beautiful, wish the lute hadn't fallen out of style. would be amazing to see people playing it more often.

My father is a lute maker. We live far from each other now. So hearing you play makes me feel closer to home.

What a godlike instrument. It is like the harpsichord of guitars; a very baroque -sounding piece. It’s like a tune one would hear in a medieval tavern. Very good job on this piece.

The lute makes the Pavan sound authentic and you made the lute sound amazing

Guy's been using this song as an example for ages now, and just now we hear it in its ultimate form. I know he's inmortal, but he really likes to take his time for this kind of stuff.

John Dowland, what a giant in his time and ours. The lute touches my soul like no other instrument. I played violin, yet wishing for the lute. Nothing else calms the soul as well.

Brandon's playing both inspires me to practice more, but at the same time, is so unattainable that it makes me want to quit!
Here's another example of His flawless technique!

I wish someone would look at me the way Brandon looks at his music at 1:38 <3

Thank you as always Brandon for making me feel connected to the culture of humans who lived nearly 500yrs ago🙏 It's truly beautiful, and carries the same power that I'm sure it did way back when. Thank you❤

Out of the topic but dude you really inspire me to keep playing guitar and improve technically. Such clean playing!

This is just sounding so good. There's always been something about the sound of the lute for me, can't say exactly what, but just love it. It's like a "living" piece of history, you can recreate the sounds and feelings from an era long gone and that amazes me. Thank you for another amazing performance!

I brought proof on Brandon being a vampire:
1. Immortality: Long hair, thin skin and an extraordinary appetite for classical music
2. Avoids sunlight: Palid but still handsome
3. Apathic staring: 0:19

Thanks, once again, for a beautiful rendering of such a wonderful piece of music. You have phrased it with great finesse.
