It might not be the year 2000 anymore, but computers have still been causing date-related shenanigans...

Be careful about falling in to the trap of thinking 'nothing major happened, so it was never that big of a problem' - remember that a lot of computer scientists and programmes put in a lot of work to get systems updated so that there WOULDN'T be big problems. It's hard to say what would have happened if things went differently, admittedly.

Riley: "Because computers are stupid"
But they are really fast at it.

Y2k didn't happen because the entire industry got behind it, and fixed the issue. Minus some taxi cabs and a few terminals that didn't get patched, it all went smooth because we fixed the issue ahead of time.

Calling y2k a "nothing burger" completely trivializes the thousands of man-hours and millions, if not billions, of dollars spent to make sure as little as possible happened. And even with all that there were problems in hospital systems and other important stuff like that.

"not much of anything happened"

Other that a bunch of us busting our asses to make sure that nothing happened.

That keycap is literally the first thing from an LTT ad I've actually wanted to buy.

Why does everyone write off Y2K?
The reason nothing much happened was because programmers did their best to reduce the problem as much as possible. And it worked.

Give the 90s programmers some credit.

The MySQL TIMESTAMP type can't store dates above 2038, I bet we'll see a ton of things break then

About Y2K: I know you meant to say "Thank you for a job well done" but is sounded a bit like you said "Nothing burger" or something like that.

Why not go into the bugs and the fixes that prevented issues from happening when 2000 came around? There must be a few developers from the 90s that probably can tell stories about odd bugs.

Calling Y2K a nothing burger really devalues the amount of real work we put in to stop it from happening. I honestly think an apology is in order.

Simple solution to the Y10K problem - Hexadecimal Year code. 2021 = 07E5, 10000 = 2710. I reckon by the year FFFF, which is in 63000-odd years from now, our decedents would have found a better way to mark the passage of time. Here's to a happier 07E6.

My channel for the longest time had the Unix time glitch, in that it said it was created on December 31st, 1969. It eventually got corrected back to March 2009.

2000 was only a "nothing burger" because patches and updates were released beforehand.

I remember when IT guys were getting the computer systems set up for the year 2000. It went smoothly for the business I worked at because they were ready for it.

2 things about the Y2K bug:

1. there actually were a lot of low issue hiccups, just not the giant problems expected. I remember that some prison sentences had 100 years added or taken off in some places, which was quickly fixed. I also had the Y2K bug hit my "Math Blaster" game, it recorded my new highscores in 1900.

2. People seem to not talk about how the Y2K "nothing burger" was like that because a ton of IT professionals found a problem and worked hard to fix it before people got hurt.

Y2K didn't happen because people like my dad worked to fix bugs in company software. They had a future room where they would test software by simulating crossing over to the year 2000

I am still living Y2K!
My life was great up until Y2k. I was working, "moving on Up" the IT chain. We replaced all of the old computers.

Then, After Y2k, they fired everyone!
All of the computers were new and there wasn't anything to fix!

After that I went into debt with my student loans and my car loan. Lost all of my savings and have never quite recovered because I am now disabled and living on a fixed income.

Thank You Y2k!
