There’s life in the pigeon Aviary ོ
The History of Pigeons ✨

The ancestor of the pigeon, the rock pigeon, developed 25 million years ago. It is the only ancestor of the domestic pigeon. The first rock pigeons appeared in South Asia, in the region of today's India. They then colonized Western Europe and North Africa. Fossils of this wild pigeon, dating back 310,000 years, have been found in Jordan and Palestine.
Attracted by cereal crops, it was the pigeon that first came to Man. After discovering the extraordinary abilities of the pigeon, Man quickly gathered them in dovecotes for his personal use.
It was in ancient Egypt that the pigeon began to be domesticated and raised, first for its meat and then as a carrier pigeon. Indeed, when a pigeon is released, it always returns to the place where it was raised and fed. The Egyptians, Persians, Chinese and Greeks used carrier pigeons as messengers during their war campaigns or for trade. Pigeon fancier servants were specially assigned to their care and transport.
The Romans built enormous dovecotes that could hold 4,000 to 5,000 pigeons. Pigeons were used for all occasions, a real post office was set up. For conquests or even during chariot races, pigeons were "sent" to inform.
In the 17th century, the number of dovecotes in France was estimated at 42,000. They were an outward sign of wealth. The larger the dovecote, the richer its owner.
The domestic pigeon was used until the beginning of the 18th century to produce meat. It is an animal with a high reproductive capacity. The pigeon is also a meat available at any time of the year because even when the conditions are not favorable for it to feed in the fields, it can be fed grain. In addition, it is a practical meat because it can be transported on foot. Pigeons are therefore widely used during long journeys, by boat for example.
Pigeons are also very useful thanks to the colombine (their droppings) which, rich in nitrogen and phosphoric acid, is a first-rate fertilizer for crops such as hemp or tobacco. Colombine can even appear in marriage contracts as part of the dowry. In the 18th century, breeding conditions changed. The cultivation of turnips and rutabagas reduced interest in pigeons. The decline in hemp cultivation, the development of market gardening and later the appearance of chemical fertilizers contributed to the gradual abandonment of dovecotes.
During wars, pigeons are a major help. Many are used to transmit information, but also to spy on the enemy, the pigeon can be equipped with cameras. "Soldier pigeons" are decorated in the same way as real soldiers. Monuments are also dedicated to them. For example, the pigeon Vaillant died in 1916 after having transmitted a distress message despite the gunfire and gas from the German front.
Since the revolution of 1789, pigeons have been settling in cities. They come from captivity or breeding. As for wild pigeons, in France they are only found on certain cliffs in Corsica. Today, breeding for its meat is much less important. On the other hand, breeders practice breeding ornamental pigeons for beauty contests as is done for cats or dogs. There are about 300 breeds of pigeons that have been created by crossbreeding. Pigeon fanciers, for their part, breed racing pigeons to perform races.
