The very last tip about the Defraging really helped. My disk for some reason fragments really fast. And I mean REALLY fast. I’m going to look for a ssd that will work with my system because it is getting really annoying having to go into the optimise drive utility thing to defrag multiple times a day.

A new installation of Windows will typically start fast.
So if your system suddenly takes more time to start, then try to determine what changed.

Did you just install something?
Did you just visit a sketchy web site?
Did you just make a Control Panel setting change?
Etc.

When you do install something new, even if it does not require a re-boot, you should probably do a re-boot.
Make sure that all is well, rather than waiting days or weeks before you do a re-boot.

And before you install anything, you should do a backup.
Yes, you can often do an uninstall. But that does not always work, or some malicious program might refuse to uninstall (or claim to uninstall and still run in the background). The uninstall could leave things behind, or break something.

If you have a backup from when your computer was running fast and without issues, then if something goes wrong, you can go back to running fast without issues.

Antiviruses do scan important areas on startups. That adds significant amount to the boot time.

I sped up boot time significantly by switching to Linux. 🙊

Installing some programs can affect boot times as some of there programs also install services that load and run during windows startup. Also, some device drivers like printers may also install proprietary programs that also run on startup.

Leo,
A couple of things. First I don't know where you get your ideas from for these videos on a daily basis but it's amazing how many are of interest and I learn something from them. Even at the age of 79 and not being tech savvy.

Second, I did look at the apps on my machine and find it somewhat concerning. I'm sure there are many that slow my machine down but I don't have a clue where to start. There are so many Microsoft, HP and Intel apps and others that surely some could be removed to increase performance. Perhaps you could someday shed some light on general apps from any company that are just not needed but find their way to most computers. The same applies to startup items.

Third, You mentioned going to a SSD which brings up two issues I could think of. 1 How does one get into the laptop to change it themselves and how do you get all of the info from the old to the new(backup?)? Thank you. JimE
