In my childhood I used to hear two great batsman one is Sachin and another Brian Lara.

I respect Sanga for sharing his personal favorite instead of picking both or giving a non-answer! I must add given his own exploits in all three forms of the modern game plus his wicket keeping and captaincy his greatness is not far off from Brian or Sachin!

Both Lara Sachin were great. Even Sanga himself was great batsman along with Pointing Dravid and Jack. Sachin played less no of tests when he was in prime form. It is only after 1996 that India started playing 10 more than 10 tests in a year. Injuries and restrictions on some kind of shots were another problem with Sachin. My favourite innings is 175 against West Indies in 2002 to save the test match at Kolkata

Yes both can't be compared. Records, techniques makes god of cricket Sachin, but the elegance, skill and percevirance shown by the westindian man makes him immortal. I am sure of u ask even Sachin and Lara who do they consider greatest, I am sure the answer would be "I loved watching him bat, that's it!".

Well said Sangakkara! A man who was very stylish (must be a left-hander thing), scored big centuries and many test runs himself. Like he said, it is Lara for me. My reason go beyond his style of batting though centering more around how from the mid 90's all the way to his retirement, he time and time again had to come to his team's rescue and did so like none of his peers had and no other batsman has done since. I mean, most of his big centuries came when WI was a few runs for 1 or 2 wickets down and many times when their innings was over, Brian's score would account for more than half the total. It was just RIDICULOUS the amount of times he had to do this over his career and he did so with much flair and exquisite batting which could have been brutal at times. It is ironic that among his many batting records he has the IGNOMINOUS record of being the ONLY batsman in TEST CRICKET HISTORY to have scored a century and DOUBLE century in the same test and still end up on the losing side. This is the ultimate example of how much WI depended on this man and how poor a team it was during much of his career all the way till now.
For me there will never, ever be another batsman like Lara. He was just that special.

actually cant compare both..both have played some exquisite cricket for their country. Dont forget Lara's 400, Sachin's 200, Lara's 153 vs aus(regarded the best apart from 270 for sir Bradman), Sachin's desert storm, Lara's backlift and timing, Sachin's straight drive and timing.
Its like comparing the 2 jewels.

Lara was more classic and entertaining to watch and Sachin was more steady and Brilliant. If I had to chose one I would say Lara, I was there when Lara made the 400 runs.

You watch him you waana watch him more ! That's fuckin true ! Lara is most stylish and flamboyant batsmen ♥️ sachin is no where near lara ! Sachin took 153 matches to break Lara's record of most runs which lara did in just 123 matches !

Allan Donald talks abt Sachin, Lara, Steve waugh in an interview in 2009,

I had been watching Sachin Tendulkar on and off before we (South Africa) were readmitted in 1991.

Everything about him is just so exceptional. He is wonderful technically and he has everything - class, speed, all the shots, and he is cool under pressure. Cricketers always talk about his amazing balance, even the Aussies. I've seen tapes of Sunil Gavaskar and if you split the screen between him and Tendulkar, they look virtually identical. I have never seen a man with such immaculate balance - it is freakish.

People go to a Test match just to watch Tendulkar. I, for one, would rather watch him than bowl against him. Actually, I'm glad I'll never have to bowl to him in a Test match again, though I've been quite successful against him. He is No. 1 in my book - the best player I have ever had the privilege of bowling to. There's Steve Waugh and there's Brian Lara, who was wonderful in 1995, but Tendulkar is a class above, consistently special.

The best knock I can remember him playing was at Newlands in 1997, when he was just unstoppable. We only got him thanks to a blinding catch by Adam Bacher off a hook shot, otherwise he would have gone on and on.

Under Hansie Cronje we studied hard for a Tendulkar weakness. We thought he might be vulnerable, especially early in his innings, to the ball that is bowled from wide of the crease, coming back in off a good length. He might then be bowled through the gate, or be lbw, especially on English wickets. We also tried peppering him with short balls - not many top-class batters like that - but it didn't really seem to bother him. The one thing that might rattle him is being restricted. He loves scoring, and scoring quickly, and if he is frustrated, sometimes he goes out and looks for the big shot.

I don't think he really gets rattled by sledging. Glenn McGrath tried it and Tendulkar just kept running at him and hitting him back over his head for four. I think that, like Steve Waugh, sledging just makes him more focused: I don't think it is a good idea to have a word.

Tendulkar is already a legend so I'm not sure how he'll be remembered - what comes after legend? . He's the best in the world, one of the most magnificent players there's ever been. He's also a nice guy, a soft-hearted bloke who gives 110% and just loves playing cricket.

Doesn't matter what Sanga says. Brian himself has said: Tendulkar is best of all time and he is proud to be mentioned in the same line as Tendulkar. And Bradman said "I never saw myself play but I feel after seeing Tendulkar on TV, he is playing much the same way I used to."

Until the day I die....I will always prefer Lara over tendulkar and if Lara was treated half as good the way tendulkar was...his records would have been head to head
