AppleCare has been around for some time now, but is it worth the extra cost? In this video I explore some of the options available to you as a consumer, and also give you my opinion as to why AppleCare (in particular AppleCare+) is likely not worth it no matter if it's for an iPhone, Mac, or iPad.

A general rule of thumb for insurance is, if they try really hard to sell it then it’s not worth it. Because they only do that when they know you aren’t gonna use it. If not, there’s usually a long and strict screening process to make sure you’re not gonna use it before they sell it to you.

In 2008 I bought a MacBook Pro. I bought AppleCare (I don't think Plus existed at the time) for US$275 or so. After the year's warranty expired, I had to take the thing to the Apple Store for repairs four times for sundry thermal and GPU issues. In the end it saved me nearly US$1000 on a new logic board. Apple thermal issues are no joke, though M1 may change that. Retina MacBook screens are also insanely expensive, even from Mr. Rossman.

If you buy Apple care you still have to pay if you need a repair. You get a discount but repairs aren't free. They might replace a battery so you are basically paying for a battery replacement upfront

Thanks for great advice! I'd love to hear your suggestions for buying used or refurbished in the various Apple product lines.

Finally someone who talk about AppleCare. Thanks for the video. I live in Puerto Rico (USA territory) and you can buy everything from any company in USA (BH, Adorama, Amazon, Apple, etc) and get your package of the product here by USPS, FedEx, UPS etc but you can't buy extended warranty like AppleCare. So thanks again now I can buy my Mac Mini M1.

I've been using Apple products since 2003 and never bought Apple Care for myself, but regularly do so for my wife coz she is clumsy incarnated. I think phones are generally the only devices that need insurance even though I had a bad experience with my iMac. Luckily that time it was just months after I bought it.

Totally agree! I always take good care of my things and have never needed to repair or replace a single item especially something as expensive as these. Thanks for sharing your thoughts i hope it helps a lot of folks

Wow, thank you for making this. It was so well explained with sources provided. You've convinced me to save the cash. I do agree that AppleCare on the watch could be worth it, so I'll definitely consider that.

Idk, I’m willing to pay for peace of mind. Especially for iPads. It’s dirt cheap to protect an iPad and deductible is like $49. I personally never had to use it on my iPad, but having it on my wife’s iPad Pro 12.9” and her accidentally dropping it, already paid for itself plus our AppleCare on other devices.

Thanks for going over these, for my main computers, mac pro/macbook pro I've always bought AppleCare. For the rest, I never bothered.

I did the same thing… accidentally spilled beer on my 2013 MacBook Air keyboard when it was new. I Quickly powered it down and let it dry for days after cleaning. It still works to this day but has started to show its age after 7yrs. I have a MacBook Pro now but as long as you are careful and look after your devices you don’t need AppleCare.

I've never bought AppleCare for many of my iPhones, Macs and Macbook Pros. I had a quote of $800 to replace my MBP display covered with credit card extended warranty.
