The Zurich Diamond League features a stacked field of Jakob Ingebrigtsen, Cole Hocker, Josh Kerr and Yared Nuguse among others. It has been hinted the 1500m WR will fall since the Norwegian recently shattered the 3000m WR in Silesia. In this video we will break down the likely outcome of the race, whether the WR will fall and how each athlete can hope to win this race.

Jakob was reported to have woken up sick a few days ago if not mistaken. If true that makes me sad cause idk if he’ll be in WR shape by Zurich

i hope Jabob dont try and risk to pull one of them to a wr. Let them do the job themself. He already helped them beat his own olympic record that they would not be able to do them self. Break the wr in a race without them and let them run 2.29 by themselfs and move on to 5 and 10 k and dominate there

This is what Jakobs manager said after Jakob got sick:

Jakob is not as afraid of losing as many people think. In his mind, middle distances are the Formula 1 of athletics, and it is every runner's responsibility to contribute to the circus in each and every race. That is what matters most, says Skoland.

As others have already alluded to he apparently woke up feeling sick last Thursday. We don’t know how bad of a cold it is or if it’s quite minor. My initial thoughts / prediction when I first heard that were he’d run for the win in Zurich and target a faster time in Brussels on September 13. Unfortunately I feel like the chances of a 1500m WR before the season finishes are increasingly slim. More than happy to be wrong though! If he doesn’t get any more records this year he’ll have to start making more attempts especially at the 1500 & Mile in 2025.

Not to be a naysayer, but isn't the points system based on a comparison to how others have done in the event? My point (no pun intended) is that as the 3000m is not run very often in comparison to the 1500, and it is going to be easier to score a higher number of points in the 3000, and should thus those points, relative to the points garnered in the 1500m, should be taken with a grain of salt.

One tactic kerr and hocker could exploit is to run inconsistent. We saw in the final that ingebrigtsen couldnt handle the fast pace during the first lap and is generally weak if race is not ran in even splits. If kerr runs first lap 55 - 54 and then runs second lap 60. Jakob will try to go in the lead but the damage has already been done and kerr and hocker will still have the kick in them.

Nuguse also just broke the road mile world record (although behind Elliot Giles) in Düsseldorf, Germany so I wouldn't count him out

Excellent breakdown of this. After Jakob's obliteration of the WR by the great Daniel Komen, the 1500m record is realistic for the first time in Jakob's career. It depends on him going for it all-out, which is not a given. Since he had some health issues last week, he may hold back in Zurich and go for the record in Brussels, which would cap off his season nicely 🙂

More excited if he runs 5k at brussels. Boy needs a fast 5k, something he hasn't tried since he was 20

For a good while now I’ve said that he can do the mile and 3000 WRs this season, 1500 next season. I stand by that. One down, one to go.

Jakob was in a much better shape in the wr race at 3000 m than then he ran 3.26.73 in the middle of a hard training camp before the Olympics, but sadly he fell ill after the World record at 3000 m and if he can be helthy to run before thursday it's probebly too much to ask for to have him back in WR shape because you normally need some training days and a blow out race to get back in top shape. We can have a hope that he will be able to join the race, but it's probebly too much to ask for that he has recovered and is back in the increasing shape he had after the Olympics. If he should try to take down the 1500 WR this year this might be a better attempt in the Diamond League final in Zürich, but a lot need to go the right way to take a WR, but it's a lot of other strong runners too, like the three medal winners in the Olympics. And regardingi pacing, the other strong runners in a race with pacers normally have Jakob as the last pacer, and if they are strong enough to follow behind him they can have a strong pacer to the finish line without the need to run in front like Jakob always has done after the pacers are gone, and in a race without pacers Jakob normally is a steady pacer. As a long distance runner he has to be much stronger than others to win a 1500 m race.

All this talk about super shoes, better tracks, wave lights, training programs… let’s not forget that runners in the 80s & 90s were running with shoes, tracks and training methods that were 100 times better than was available in the 50s & 60s. Everything is relative to its time in history. Pacers in races have been a thing for decades.

Think he woke up sick? If so I think he might try day 13 in the final Diamond league.

I tend to be pretty accurate on most of my opinions, and I think this is a race between kerr and Jakob. It’s evident that hocker peaked extremely hard for the Olympics and that his legs are starting to fall off judging from Lausanne. Kerr hasn’t raced much this year, and I expect him to be competitive. Mackey mentioned this season that Jakob is always on. Never has bad moments of fitness, but that Josh is getting close to that level too. More reason that kerr will be competitive for the win. Even though nuguse didn’t beat Giles in the road mile, I still don’t see him placing outside the top 5.

I wouldn't discount Kerr breaking the world record. Jakob hasn't run away from him since the world champs last year. And while Jakob will be paced to 1000, Kerr will be paced all the way to 1500 by one of the fastest middle distance runners of all time. I think his missed winter training will prove too big for Ingebrigtsen to overcome. I know he broke the 3k world record, but I think that's always been there waiting for him as a 1500-5000 specialist.

So many things have to go just great, sleep well for at least two nights, correct weather, no allergies or sickness. And, IAAF Score calculator is not divinely fact it is so far off of reality to be almost, ....almost useless. But fun vid....thankx

I’d like to see Yared Nuguse take the lead behind the pacers. Maybe he has in the past, but I’ve only seen him hang behind Jakob and Kerr. It may be time for Yarad to lead.
