CLIP DESCRIPTION:
At the fitting, Nina (Natalie Portman) begins to hallucinate strange visions and to make matters worse, she learns that Thomas (Vincent Cassel) has made Lily (Mila Kunis) her understudy.

FILM DESCRIPTION:
A psychological thriller set in the world of New York City ballet, BLACK SWAN stars Natalie Portman as Nina, a featured dancer who finds herself locked in a web of competitive intrigue with a new rival at the company (Mila Kunis). A Fox Searchlight Pictures release by visionary director Darren Aronofsky (THE WRESTLER), BLACK SWAN takes a thrilling and at times terrifying journey through the psyche of a young ballerina whose starring role as the duplicitous swan queen turns out to be a part for which she becomes frighteningly perfect. BLACK SWAN follows the story of Nina (Portman), a ballerina in a New York City ballet company whose life, like all those in her profession, is completely consumed with dance. She lives with her retired ballerina mother Erica (Barbara Hershey) who zealously supports her daughter,s professional ambition. When artistic director Thomas Leroy (Vincent Cassel) decides to replace prima ballerina Beth MacIntyre (Winona Ryder) for the opening production of their new season, Swan Lake, Nina is his first choice. But Nina has competition: a new dancer, Lily (Kunis), who impresses Leroy as well. Swan Lake requires a dancer who can play both the White Swan with innocence and grace, and the Black Swan, who represents guile and sensuality. Nina fits the White Swan role perfectly but Lily is the personification of the Black Swan. As the two young dancers expand their rivalry into a twisted friendship, Nina begins to get more in touch with her dark side with a recklessness that threatens to destroy her. -

What would have been even creepier if Keira Knightly was cast to play Lily along side Natalie!

In reality (as someone who was a principal in a ballet company) an alternate/understudy would have been cast around the same time as general casting. Meaning Lily would have been chosen as an understudy right after auditions, not the day before the show lol.

Natalie deserves her Oscar win for this, but Mila Kunis was kind of underrated in this. Mila did a good job! I honestly would like to have seen Black Swan from Lily’s point of view; that would have been interesting

Love Aronofskys right direction and how he plays around with Nina’s psychosis
The pressure of striving to be perfect has her descend into madness

There is something so addicting and soothing about these scenes of the black and white, metallic and austere backstage of the ballet. These 1 on 1 exchanges between Nina and the seamstress, as well as with the acting coach and physical therapist...they are comforting in a weird way. The atmosphere is precise and strict and yet I’m warmed by them. What’s that about? There’s no music... it’s mostly dialogue and the white noise of sewing machines and murmuring workers. I suppose that’s it: it’s sort of like ASMR. Also, in a way, I believe if Nina began to break down and cry around this aforementioned staff, they would be nice and comfort her. They’re not competitive with her or bitter because they need to watch their weight, look a certain way. These are more down to earth people Nina gets to be around, at least that’s what I’d like to imagine. And it’s all taking place in this windowless, subterranean pocket of the theater warmed by creaking radiators, while outside New York City is frigid and yet also quite unforgiving. At some point or another everyone will leave wearing their demure street-sensible winter wear in muted shades just like the building. Nina mixes it up slightly with her baby pink trademark. It gives the impression of Nina being as asexual as a newborn, running home to mommy after work. Anybody who has a mind for fashion I’m sure cant help but feel tickled thinking of dressing for cold weather in New York, and this movie scratches the itch. Of course, I’m aware the reality of how most New Yorkers dress in wintertime isn’t anything like what Vogue would have you believe but it’s fun to think about the fantasy of being a willowy ballerina off duty. All of these things make Black Swan a cozy movie for me. Cozy first, psychologically thrilling second. Can anyone else relate?

"I had my editor count shots. There are 139 dance shots in the film. 111 are Natalie Portman untouched. 28 are her dance double Sarah Lane. If you do the math, that's 80% Natalie Portman. What about duration? The shots that feature the double are wide shots and rarely play for longer than one second. There are two complicated longer dance sequences that we used face replacement. Even so, if we were judging by time, over 90% would be Natalie Portman. And to be clear, Natalie did dance on pointe in pointe shoes. If you look at the final shot of the opening prologue, which lasts 85 seconds, and was danced completely by Natalie, she exits the scene on pointe. That is completely her without any digital magic. I am responding to this to put this to rest and to defend my actor. Natalie sweated long and hard to deliver a great physical and emotional performance. And I don't want anyone to think that's not her they are watching. It is." - *Darren Aronofsky, Director of Black Swan*
