How to Create Fog in Photoshop [Photoshopdesire.com]

Photoshop Tutorial : In this episode we go through the process of creating foggy atmosphere with filters.

first duplicate background layer and change blending to soft light.
create new layer and name it “fog”.
click quick mask tool [keyshortcut Q].
goto filters and render then difference clouds.
remove quick mask. now fill selection with white [ shift + backspace ].
Deselect selection. i want fog larger & smooter so i will enlarge fog layer with transform tool.
if you like smaller fog then keep it same. you can use same process for videos as well.

0:19 > "ctrl+J": duplicate bg layer> layers panel: select the new duplicated layer> move it to the top> blend=soft light> hit "create new layer" icon, rename="fog"
0:54 > "Q": turn on quick mask mode> top panel: filter, render, difference clouds
1:08 > note: now you can see the actual mask in color as in quick mask mode
"Q": turn off quick mask mode> "shift+F5": open fill window> fill window: color=white> hit "OK"> "ctrl+D": deselect selections> layers panel: eye on/off the fog layer, to check the result> note: to make fog effect larger and smoother, enlarger the fog layer> layers panel: select the fog layer, rename="fog small"> "ctrl+J": duplicate it, rename="fog large"> note: so we can keep a smaller fog layer> "ctrl+T": enlarger the layer> top bar: w/h=200%> "V", canvas: move the fog large layer around, where the fog hides the character in a much less way

I’ve seen a few comments on the size of clouds being too small. Have a look at your canvass size. If you have a smaller photo / canvass, you’ll get the effect as per the tutorial. If you try to use a mammoth canvass size, you will get pin prick clouds. Very useful tutorial and what I was looking for, thank you 🙏

I use basically the same method as I find it gives the best results, but I tend to do 2 or three Cmd Js and delete the fog around different objects on different layers to give depth. Then I put the front layer, one where I have deleted nothing at about 30% opacity. I also try to give each layer a different free transform. Now I've written that I realise just how good you video is, you obviously explained much better than I can.

I prefer to copy the fog layer 3 times, 1 make 200%, one i leave 100% and 1 i make it 300-350%, and then i just adjust opacity of each until i obtain the best effect.

My difference cloud pattern is much much smaller than shown in your video. I have maybe 1000 small clouds in the image. How can I increase the size of the clouds from the start? If I just increase it by dragging the size of the layer the clouds get really pixelated.
