Whenever I hear "Estado Libre Asociado" I laugh because it reminds me of my highschool history teacher. He was always like "Why do they call it that? We're not a state, were not free, and we're not associated to anything!!"
To be fair, Luis Muñoz Marín (first puertorican governor in history and the person who coined it) was actually a hardcore Independentist. He called it that because he had been planning to eventually push the independence for Puerto Rico, but Congress proved to be a step forward, they knew of his plans and blocked it for 120 years now.

Such a fascinating video! It’s crazy to me that I know so little about Puerto Rico even though I’m from the US. Sigh.

More fun facts:

1.The coquí isn't a frog it's its own species. Because unlike frogs, they don't have webbed feet.

2.San Juan is an islet. That's why people that live there say that they are going to the "big/main island" because they are just 2 separate lands united by a bridge.

3.We tried to independ ourselves once and it didn't work. Also known as "El Grito de Lares" this was barely a war which was planned by rebels to be in Camuy, september 24 1868 but changed to Lares in september 23 1868 because of rumors that then were spread to the Spanish government. It was succesful and on september 24, the rebels went to San Sebastian but that day many were shot and some sent to jail. And we gave up independence...

4.Puerto Rico *WASN'T* discovered by Christopher Colombus. It was discovered by Martín Alonzo Pinzón. Here's what happened... Martín seperated his ship from Christopher Colombus' float and found Puerto Rico. It was notified to Christopher. Christophet was the one who signed the contract with the royalty not Martín there for all of the credit goes to Christopher.

You guys are super wholesome. That usually means one of two things: you're either great people or serial killers. Love your channel. Keep up the good work.

It is my believe that we (the Puerto Ricans) call "peso" the USD due to cultural reminiscences. Two years before the island started being a US Colony, back when it was a colony under the Spanish crown, Spain gave Puerto Rico the authority (or autonomy) to have its own economy and official currancy, "el peso puertorriqueño." This coin had the same value as the USD, but the US changed this by devaluing 40% of the Puerto Rican "peso". Eventually, the island's official currency became the USD.
