President-elect Donald Trump has said that he plans to slash the number of federal workers and in some cases, dismantle entire federal departments. What many fail to understand is that most federal workers contribute significantly to the economy by paying taxes and purchasing goods and services. If 500, 000 workers are laid off, that’s a substantial amount of money no longer circulating in the economy. These jobs won’t simply be replaced, and Trump’s other economic plans are unlikely to create new opportunities, leading to higher unemployment. This could trigger a vicious downward spiral, potentially resulting in a recession or even a depression. Any supposed benefits will primarily go toward tax breaks for billionaires, offering no real advantage to the broader population.
