My son accidentally hit a deer with his new car here in Middle TN. He has been wary about dusk driving ever since. But a year before I heard dogs barking like crazy. I looked out into my big backyard and saw two large dogs trying to attack a young buck in the pouring down rain. I grabbed my cane, I was arthritic, 69 and raced out to help the deer. I screamed at the dogs to "get back". My 120 Lab/Livestock Guardian mix was on my back porch barking loudly non-stop. Waving my cane at the attacking dogs I saw the deer's front leg was ripped and bleeding. I made eye contact with the deer and knew he realized I was trying to help him. I continued screaming at the dogs and the deer turned and ran into the woods. I ran around to the pond, the young buck was in the pond for his safety. I kept coming at the dogs and they finally ran off. The deer finally escaped and went back into the woods. One of the most profound experiences of my life, I am now 75!!

That deer is or was definitely sick from a disease like CWD, not frozen scared. This guy has likely killed a bunch of deer by “saving” this sick deer, as now it might go around his habitat infecting other deer.

What you should do in this situation is simply not touch the deer, or get close to it, or try to be a hero by carrying it back to where it came from. The best thing you can do is call local animal services and they’ll make sure that deer is fine, and if he’s not and suffering from, for example, CWD, they’ll put it down and end its suffering.
