Squid Game With And Without Special Effects

What Squid Game Scenes Look Like Without CGI

Was the filming experience of Squid Game as intense as the games themselves? In many cases - yes! The production team behind the Netflix K-Drama sensation went all out, recreating intense conditions and shockingly realistic settings. Filming the Glass Stones scene took a lot of meticulous planning to make sure all the footage needed was captured - no small feat since instead of resorting to CGI for the major glass explosion, they made it happen for real in the studio! Filming took place in multiple stages - not dissimilar to Tug of War! The actors had to perform at one hundred percent to make sure the scene came off authentically, all while tugging for their lives, hanging just over the edge or group swinging off a platform. Red Light, Green Light had a huge set- one that had even more people on set behind the scenes to make sure every component was in place. Aside from the background, very little CGI was used in the scene- even all the perished bodies strewn around the playing area were the real actors, lying still until they finished filming. The last round taking place in the same space, the brutal Squid Game between Gi-Hun and Sang-Woo brought absolute chaos to the screen. On the set, it got pretty chaotic, especially since they really made it rain and the actors and camera crew were all working under much harsher conditions.
From incredible and colorful set designs to daring practical stunts, the Squid Game team didn’t hold anything back.

I am so so so happy they decided to use physical sets, props, and effects for almost everything they did. I fully believe it's one of the biggest reasons the show is so visually stunning and is as popular as it is right now. Goes to show the amount of effort you put into a project is actually reflected in the final product

Better watch it in the Korean language, it has more impact and is chilling!

Edit: To clarify: Best to watch it in Korean with English subtitles, not dub.

I watched the English dubbed version too but I cringed so hard (to the voice actors, sorry) It didn't capture the intensity when the actors were extremely immersed in their role for example during one of the scenes between the leading actress, Sae- byeok, and Ji- yeong during the Marble Game. After they filmed the scene, Saw- byeok still can't stop crying. This is something that the voice actors cannot duplicate.

They also did not do justice to the gangster (he sounded like a teenager pretending to be a "man" TT.TT) and Han Mi- nyeo (she became whiney rather than unhinged)

If you are not used to reading the subs or watching with your fam, watch the dubbed version in your language. If you are cool with reading the subtitles, well, enjoy :) There are a lot more Korean dramas, movies, and songs that are really gooood.

The glass slow motion scene was one of the best scenes I’ve ever seen in any form of media. Just the build up of the drums and the scary music in the background on top of that beautifully put-together scene. Even 2 weeks after I finished the show I still think about it.

People hate how popular this show is but have no idea how much effort and dedication was put into it.

Netflix paid 20 million for it and it's made over 900 million after 10 years of studios turning it down .
What an eye for talent

As a korean, this really means something. 10 years ago, we looked up to western movies and shows, thinking they were much “superior” than ours. Now people from all over the globe are watching korean movies and shows :)

The dubbed English version really removed the emotion the actor gives. Nothing beats the original Korean version.

Honestly, it's not surprising anymore to see the behinds of Squid Game. I watched a lot of korean variety shows and they can even make a fully functioning robot and even a restaurant that delivers food in a roller coaster like way 😆 They're honestly amazing and the people behind each shows.

Did it ever cross the haters' mind that this is one of the many reasons we love this show? The fact that the team put so much time and effort into making every detail and as a result, got a well shot, well constructed and well executed show.

Squid Game is better than everything I've seen this year. Knowing how hard they worked and how much work went into all of the details makes me love and appreciate the show even more. Practical effects will always win over visual.

See? It is possible to act well in front of a green screen. But it takes a good story, and a good director.
