MPLS uses labels as its primary method of directing data between nodes. To more deeply understand the use of labels in MPLS, it is necessary to first define some additional aspects of the technology.

In this video, we'll be examining the infrastructure of an MPLS network, we'll take a look at device roles such as Customer Edge (CE), Provider Edge (PE), Label Edge Router (LER), and Label Switch Router (LSR), and the actual labels used in MPLS. We will also introduce Label Distribution Protocol or LDP, a protocol at the very heart of MPLS.

In this and upcoming videos in the series, you’ll learn where MPLS fits within the broader networking landscape, the problems it was designed to solve, and the key benefits it offers, such as improved traffic management, scalability, and support for multiple services.
