Go to any marriage or special event in South India, and you will hear a very unique and melodious instrument being played. It’s called the Nadaswaram. This instrument is ancient and is played in temples too. Also known as Nagaswaram, it is one among the world’s loudest instruments that is non-metallic. A wind instrument, Nadaswaram is quite similar to a shehnai that is a popular musical instrument from Northern part of India. The acoustics of this instrument are divine like that add an air of richness to weddings and other important functions.

Nadaswaram cannot be played by any player. One needs to be trained and skilled in playing it. Musicians that are trained in playing it are called Vidwans and it takes years to master it. Usually, in marriages, this instrument is played in pairs along with Thavil, a pair of drums. However, sometimes it’s played alone. It is during 15th century for the first time the nagaswaram and the tavil were seen as distinct musical instruments of the temple. In terms of the evolution of Carnatic music itself, the improvisations played on the nadaswaram in the temple have greatly influenced the music produced at concerts in the city today.
