I think they test the sound level at an outdoor setting. The walls and ceiling can bring up the db and can’t really run away from it. It’s like the difference you notice when you hear a gun shot at an indoor shooting compared to an outdoor range…big difference.

I think your problem is you’re reading the decibels from inside your shop and it’s making it louder, I also am not sure how they rate these but I had mine running outside in the backyard and was standing right next to it and it was 71 to 72 dB and I’m pretty sure you’re supposed to be at least 4 feet away when testing if I remember right so I’m pretty sure if I would have stepped a little farther away I would’ve easily gotten the 69 dB rating and when it’s sitting outside in the backyard running I can barely even hear it going it’s so quiet so I think where you put it in relation to echoing off of walls and metal in your shop is probably making it louder.

I purchased the Harbor Freight next size up quiet compressor and yes its QUIETER but, dont expect something that wont wake the neighbors at 10 PM at night. Totally happy with my purchase.

California Air Tools tests their units at 20' to arrive at the ratings they claim. There's a few vids of people who've done that with the Kobalt and got pretty much the same (or within the margin of error) as the MFG claimed as well. As with generators, there doesn't seem to be an official distance for the measurement, but it does look like most MFGs use 20' with air compressors. Regardless, 80 is still significantly better than the 100dB the older compressors routinely hit.

My big old craftsman will blow your eardrums out, but it’s been reliable. I want something quieter. So this might be a possibility.

Pretty sweet compressor Griffin! I got rid of a larger one for a small one as well. It’s a small Kobalt one, it works great and takes up a lot less space. I just use it for my nailer’s. My paint sprayer has a built-in compressor which is pretty sweet. Catch up with you soon buddy. 😎👊
