Socrates is surrounded by his disciples, and Plato is seated at the end of the bed. Plato was not actually present during this scene, as he was still young when Socrates died. But he wrote about Socrates' death in "Phaedo", which David followed closely in his painting. We can imagine that this scene represents Plato's mind, as he attempts to conjure the scene in his imagination as he writes.
