VW ID Buzz: The fully electric Volkswagen

The fully electric Volkswagen ID Buzz might just be one of the most recognisable cars of the past decade.

The all-new VW ID Buzz goes on sale at the end of 2022 as either a five-seat passenger vehicle or as a commercial van with a three-person bench in the front. A campervan model is due to land later in 2023. In this CarGurus UK video, Vicky Parrott tests the passenger version of the ID Buzz to see how it fares for space and practicality, as well as looking at its design, and getting behind the wheel to see what it’s like to drive.

The ID Buzz features a battery with a useable capacity of 77kWh, which is good for a WLTP range of 258 miles from a full charge. It sits on the same MEB electric car platform as VW’s other EVs, including the ID.3 and ID.4. However, the Buzz stands out as a unique offering in the electric car class, and could be a surprise hit despite its high purchase price.

Could you be tempted into ID Buzz ownership?

Pros
Fantastic styling
Good to drive
Beautifully finished interior

Cons
Hugely expensive
Charging cables cost extra
You’ll have to wait for the campervan version

The CarGurus verdict

The Volkswagen ID Buzz is a brilliant EV, and an even better lifestyle van or MPV. It could be improved with more reasonable option prices, and more logical volume and climate controls. The longer-range, seven-seat model and the ‘proper’ Campervan that many are waiting for will be really welcome additions to the range, too.

Even so, for the space and versatility the ID Buzz offers, as well as the style kudos and tech features, it really is hard to argue against. Yes, a Tesla Model Y will go further to a charge, a Hyundai Ioniq 5 is more affordable, and the Ford Mustang Mach-E is much more fun to drive. But the ID Buzz is unique in what it offers, and the balance of common-sense, versatility and incredible coolness is unmatched by anything else.

What a lovely design and so appealing. The price, however, makes it out of reach for so many people, it's unfortunate, to say the least. Glad they brought it to the market, so sorry I can't afford one. Anywho, another great review from Vicki and the crew at CG!

Hi Vicky.
I've watched a few of these iD. Buzz reviews now - so, all credit to you, then, that you're the only reviewer to have mentioned VW's inclusion of the vehicle-to-grid capability... like you suggested, a hugely important EV feature moving forward.
Great work...! 😎

Great review. Beautiful van, insane pricing, should be half as much, too many options at that kind of money.

Thanks for a great review. ID. BUZZ looks really fine to me and easily earns your “It’s really very good” verdict. What a shame that it is immediately ruled out by such a high price tag.

Does it come from the factory with solar on top to charge the batt pack on days when you don't drive it or when you have it parked at work? With that much roof space you could easily get ten to twenty miles a day of free charge from the sun.

Great review 👏I love the style, look and practicality but too pricey and in my opinion. Is a bit slow for EV too

Lovely Vehicle, but shame about the Price, and also I wish it came with also 7 or 8 seater, and I wish it had knobs and more buttons to operate some of the features.

It sorely needs a pano roof as an option. Strangely a sunroof is not available yet

“Power your home” V2H. What they don’t tell you is that currently inverters are limited to 2.5kw/h draw which means for the average home it may power your freezer, tv and a few lights but if you boil an average kettle (2000watts) something has to give. Inverters have to catch up. VW haven’t set anything up for customers to explore this feature and you have to go to the open market. Factor in at least £1500-£2k for a V2H charger in todays money…

is the tech going to suck like id 4? where is 7 seater? if it had 7 seats id put it in consideration for purchase even with crap software.

Looks good but a realistic £60k+ and low 200s max range - I don't get it. And the less said about the touch screen controls the better.

EVs are for rich people… insane pricing. I hope the Chinese offer affordable alternatives

Love the Buzz, hate the price. VW justify the amount as someone has to pay the diesel gate fines, guess that's us.

VW is keen to charge for the emotional value & looks that the car represents. Good luck as far more capable vehicles can be purchased in that price bracket, for the real world just above 210-220 miles you would hope to get.

That sounds revolutionary, take charge from your home then give charge back from the very place you took it from
