I may be wrong but, Australia and Russia are not at war. He is not Ukrainian; he was in a war zone as a combatant, not a civilian but as a mercenary. A captured mercenary is not a POW and is not protected, and if the capturing army so wishes, a mercenary is liable to summary execution.

Nobody forced him to go there, he could stay in China and work, or come back to Australia, but he chose to fight for Ukraine and get paid for it, so he got what he asked for. Not feeling sorry for him.
