Today's Topic:
We discuss what SMTP Relay is and why it's an important tool if you are going to be running servers that need to send emails. SMTP Relays allow you to easily send email from your server without worrying about Spam Blacklists or blocked ports.

Hi..
Good Day Sir,
i want to ask 2 questions here...
1- what is basically the SMTP role in MS windows Server 2019 or any other edition? is that the SMTP server or SMTP Relay ? i am asking this because i am confuse since if we look at the role's name it says SMTP but when we try to configure it then it works almost like a SMTP Relay....
2- my 2nd question is if we for example want to send 1000 msg per day using an SMTP Relay service (third Party), then what is the Guarantee that the SMTP Relay's Ports will not be blocked on the recipient end? i am asking this because now a days all the SMTP servers are smart and they 'll block any port receiving many emails in bulk from a specific IP and Port.. so if SMTP relay is sending 10000 msgs per day so why not the receiving SMTP server will consider its IP and port as Spam and block that IP and port?

I wonder if Linux will ever wise up and make software easy enough for
the newbie to install? That's how Windows got so popular. But then,
perhaps Linux coders like to keep it all confusing so as to appear wise.
What a paradox! LOL!

wow, got confused of the using of his words. One you use your own mail server as the one "relaying" the outgoing mails, as being the relay server, .. but then later, the email server that's actually is sending out the mails to the foreign destination MTA is called the relay server... Which is called the relay server now? Your own email server (which you 'bring of the hook') or the one that's will be doing the final "send"?

Great video Eli, SMTP relay is the service I used until recently. Now I'am using Google for Business because my time is become more valuable than that server. I only have one request, can you make the the transitions in the video more smooth? It makes it a little bit nicer to watch. But besides that great video!

I think you are exaggerating a bit on the difficulties of setting up and running a mail server. Even for an absolute beginner, there are docker images which can be run with a simple docker pull command. Also, the whole "protection from spam" thing that email providers are supposed to offer, is highly debatable. I think that the main reason that centralized mail services mark as spam anything, is pretty much to keep away the competition and any rising open source self-hosted solutions. I once set up a portable smtp server and a mass mailer and spammed 100.000 emails from my university's network. The last emails I added were my own Gmail, yahoo, and outlook ones. Around half emails were delivered and the ones reaching my inboxes were not marked as spam because the source ip was of a reputable university (even though no encryption whatsoever was present, and the body was a single line of repeated text).
Just my 2 cents...

0:32 "[you] can get the exact same quality [e-mail server provider] for free" - Are there any free mail server providers any more? Google stifled App Engine features for free accounts (which included removing the ability to have more than one free email address). And just last month, Outlook.com (owned by Microsoft) entirely removed the free option to use their mail servers with your custom domain; you now have to pay at least $120 per year per user. Are there any reliable free mail server providers still out there?

I hate how Windows Live email service blocks emails from 'Superdrug', just because it has 'drug' in it. I, as the account holder, should decide what I send and receive, not windows. Their customer support is rubbish. Their (verified) twitter account hasn't been used for years.

Eli,
I watch you selectively because I like to see you special outlook on the topics that are of interest to me. As far as I am concerned, childish behavior does not belong here. It would be very nice to have you review the Cisco ASA as a business class firewall.
Keep up the high value content and Geek On!

Did you really tell all of us that it's better to just pay to simplify things. That's not how any of us got here. Breaking down complex computer issues is what we do.

With the Fall Semester starting very soon at most Colleges and for the massive on-line courses, are there any special courses that you or others in the Start-up Community might think are  a good idea to take?  There are all the Basic Electronics and Programming and then the 'Starting a Business' Courses.  Any Thoughts?
