Ancient Norse Vikings | History Documentary

Popular, modern conceptions of the Vikings—the term frequently applied casually to their modern descendants and the inhabitants of modern Scandinavia—often strongly differ from the complex picture that emerges from archaeology and historical sources. A romanticized picture of Vikings as noble savages began to emerge in the 18th century; this developed and became widely propagated during the 19th-century Viking revival.[4][5] Perceived views of the Vikings as alternatively violent, piratical heathens or as intrepid adventurers owe much to conflicting varieties of the modern Viking myth that had taken shape by the early 20th century. Current popular representations of the Vikings are typically based on cultural clichés and stereotypes, complicating modern appreciation of the Viking legacy.

_"I have never heard such horrible singing. It's like a growl coming out of their throats, like the barking of dogs, only much more beastly."_ <--- this is metal af. xD

7:19: Only half of those who died in battle went to Valhalla. The other half went to Folkvangr, which was overseen by the goddess Freyja. Not much is known about Folkvangr, except that it’s a large meadow. Odin got half of those who fell in battle, and Freyja got the other half.

I was recently able to trace my great grandmothers family back to a man named Dirck Volkertsz De Norman, or at least that's what he was called when he lived in New Amsterdam. He was born in Bergen Norway in 1595 and was a ship carpenter. his Father was Volkert Vejle born in 1560 in Denmark in the town Vejle. That is where the trail ends. At the time in denmark apparently fixed surnames were rare.

The Norse, who landed in North America sailed from Iceland via settlements in Greenland, not directly from Scandinavia as the animation at 17:55 suggests.

I got my DNA results back a few months ago from ancestry.. 56% English, 31% Scottish, 10% Swedish, and 3% Norwegian. We live in an amazing time. I'd prefer life in the middle ages or even the Old West, but I'm glad I get to know my family tree. I've traced my lineage all the way back to Sigurd Snake in the Eye (and Ragnar if he really existed). Also a direct descendant of Rollo and William the Conqueror.

The west coast of Norway - where the strong boats for Viking sucsess were first built. Proud of our history. Danmark and Sweeden always try to claim things that are not from the Icelantic sagas. The Vikings on Iceland were Norwegian and are Norwegian in blood. Somer Irish mixed into it after we founded all the cities in Scotland, Ireland. isle of man :) Norse - Nor - Norge ;)

Can't stand it when they say, , , "that changed history", , no it didn't, , it went just as it was supposed to. To change history you have to go back.
