Rishi Sunak backs Met Police amid criticism of ‘bid to disrupt protest’ during coronation

Rishi Sunak has backed the Metropolitan Police amid accusations that the arrests of protesters were a deliberate attempt to “disrupt and diminish” dissent during the King’s coronation.

The prime minister insisted on Monday (8 May) that officers act independently of government based on “what they think is best” after claims they were cracking down at the behest of politicians.

The Met Police made 64 arrests on King’s coronation day, with 46 people bailed after being detained.

If the police operate independently to the government, why were people getting £200 fines in lockdown for ‘not following guidance’ and government members got a slap on the wrist, if that because like Boris said ‘it was only guidance, not law’

He really is a revolting person. Police genuinely embarrassed at actions of some incompetents. It indicates that peaceful, well controlled, agreed with authorities demonstration is pointless and you might as well go destructive, even violent from the start - like the suffragettes did so successfully. Heavy handedness was foolish. For the red in the face Tories - Countryside Alliance will get the same treatment - the move is towards no protesting which means no legal, organised, well-behaved protesting

Double standards. He criticised other countries for arresting protectors (no naming names but who by the way included rioters who took a gun of a policeman snd pointed it at them, made molotovs, used bricks which actually killed bystanders) but he is to arrest his own countrymen.
