What Tsuba Ring, Tsuka-maki Wrapping, and Sageo String Are Really For

Katana (Uchi-katana) have these strings called 下緒 Sageo attached to the sheath, but why do we need this? To make long stories short, they were a convenient multipurpose tool for samurai to use in various situations. These are some of the examples…

1. A string to treat injuries (to stop one's bleeding)
2. An emergency replacement for the handle wrapping
3. A rope to carry the katana on your back (when traveling long distances)
4. A rope to capture an enemy

However today for us katana trainees, the Sageo string is only used to tie the katana sheath to the hakama to prevent it from falling out of your belt. The procedure of tying it is considered to be a part of the etiquette, and you need to practice so you can do it properly and smoothly.

But please keep in mind that depending on the ryuha style, where you tie the Sageo will differ and there are some styles that do not tie it at all and just hang them too.

So it was a tourniquet, a carry handle, a sling, handcuffs, a decoration and a spare grip all in one. Outstanding.

I'm not Japanese, that I know of, but I have always felt a connection to the culture. My father was actually born in Osaka, he didn't speak English until he was almost 5. I grew up with some beautiful Japanese art in our home and always felt drawn to it. Such a beautiful culture, thank you so much for making your videos!

Can be used to carry on your back, when I was a kid I thought that was the only way to carry a sword because I thought it was badass

In one film I saw a samurai use it to tie up his sleeves before a sparring match against a rounin to keep them out of the way. It was the newer Zatoichi film with Beat Takeshi.

Don’t forget the use of Sageo for Tasuki for tying back the sleeves for fighting and Tameshigiri…

When I had my Katana collection I would sometimes use the Sageo to wrap over the Tsuba of my katanas to prevent curious children/friends from just opening them when they where in reach. Since I started my Collection at 15 yrs old I often had friends who did not have the mentality to respect a weapon collection. This kept them safe and prevented me from going crazy. I can easily see the Sageo used for the reasons you describe!

I feel so strange when I admit how much more interested I am in Japanese culture then my own. People resort to referring to me as a weeb but...I haven't watched anime in years...I do like anime however I think it's actually just the culture itself I'm most fascinated by.
