In this documentary, we take a close look at the famous Sacred Band of Carthage. In other videos, we've covered the War Elephants of Carthage, the Numidian Cavalry, and the Balearic Slingers.

We begin with an overview of the history of Carthage and the evolution of the Carthaginian Army. We then discuss the military equipment of the Sacred Band of Carthage which included richly decorated armor and weapons. This is followed by a discussion regarding their training and tactics, as well as their service history which included participating in the Punic-Sicilian Wars against the Greeks. While we don't have evidence of them participating in the Punic Wars against the Roman army, it is possible that they were present during the three invasions of Africa and would have fought in the Battle of Zama and the Siege of Carthage.

Many of their citizens die (that sacred band, thousands of them) after their last fight with Greek, and then their oligarchs decided to never use Carthage citizens for any war purpose (they mean their nobles citizens)

The dissolution of the sacred band was one of the reasons that másé Carthage rely even more on mercenaries.

Very few veterans and too high a cost to keep them

The depiction of Carthaginians wearing Greek hoplite armor in various forms of art and literature has been a subject of intrigue and debate among historians and archaeologists. This portrayal contrasts with the archaeological evidence that suggests the Carthaginians predominantly used Italic style breastplates and armor. To understand this discrepancy, it's essential to explore the historical context, the nature of Carthaginian society, and the impact of artistic interpretation and cultural exchange. the Carthaginian elite formation's adoption of Greek-style armor during the 2nd Greco-Carthaginian War, with notable differences in spear length, shield size, and formation strategy, illustrates a fundamental misunderstanding or underestimation of the integrated nature of Greek military effectiveness. While initially providing some level of resistance against the Greek hoplites, these modifications ultimately contributed to the Carthaginians' failure to adequately counter the phalanx and the versatile combat skills of Greek infantry. The reliance on shorter spears and smaller shields, without the cohesive defensive strategy offered by the phalanx formation, compounded by a lack of equivalent proficiency in swordsmanship, delineates the tactical missteps that led to the collapse of Carthaginian forces under the pressure of Greek military led by the Corinthian general Timoleon in the battle of Crimisus river.

Fun fact: it’s believed the sacred band were made mostly of same sex couple, believing that they were more likely to fight harder if they were beside a lover
