100 miles on the bike, time for an update - and I answer the burning questions like is it worth the money? how's it climb? hows it ride without the bike being turned off? and are there any issues?

Keep on with the updates ! Cool to get an “average guy” real world use.

I like that comment on climbing. Still working just as hard, but up the hill quicker. I find the same feeling on my EXe 9.8XT. I go out for 1.5 hour ride and I'm just as cooked as on my analog Fuel EX, but I covered more ground.

We just bought a EXe for my wife, only one ride so far, snow here in Idaho. Im guessing a range extender will be our next purchase. Her previous two bikes were turbo levo's. I ride a non e-bike (Ibis ripley). She can go any of my hard rides and thats been so great. My friends often leave their wives home and mine gets to in these big epic rides. So cool! We also ride double track climbs with my 89 year old Dad on his Levo. On these rides I have to say I feel pretty lucky to ride as hard uphill as I want with my two favorite people. Total game changer for us! So many ways to use these e-bikes.

160 miles done on mine. Creaking was terrible. Took headset apart, cleaned and greased it and all good. I have also opened up each pivot bolt and done the same. Very dry and not well sealed. The seat post also gets full of water. All sorted with some nice Mobil XHP222 grease to keep out the English autumn weather!! Awesome bike

Thanks for your videos! I have 200 miles on mine and really enjoy it for the same reasons you describe. My 9.8XT does make the grinding sound and it definitely comes from the motor, especially in situations where the pedal speed is catching up to the speed of the bike after rolling downhill for example. The clicking noise you describe maybe that for torque issue at the lock ring wher the spec changed from 30 to 50nm. My LBS also told me the axle had to be installed a specific way which they checked. I also had some noise coming from the headset which went away after taking it apart and lubing it properly.

My thoughts exactly! I have ridden about 40 miles NO POWER so my wife can not feel left out because I have to work much harder than usual but then using motor is exactly what you said. I am working very hard but just going faster! You get nothing free with this bike! Power out from motor is only rewarded by my power in. I find riding no power the bike handles very very well. Thats with the 1.5 lb battery installed.

620 miles on mine in 3 months.
I got the click after about 5 miles, and just loosened the two allens on the bars and tightened the head allen a small amount (less than 1/4 turn), then tightened it all back up. soerted. Nothing since. It is standard bedding in. They all do it because the builders don't want to over-tighten on a carbon headset.

Great update. I personally think the bike is perfect in 9.7. configuration. The clicking/grinding sounds needs to be acknowledge and fixed by Trek specially at this price point.

I just got my 9.7 and in 2 weeks I put on 150 miles. Love the bike especially for older guys. I’m 65 used to race Norba in my 40’s

Good review only about 70km with my bike and I agree its a mountain bikers Ebike. Best thing is that over 25km it rides just like a normal MTB

I’m mostly interested in an ebike so I can ride easy and keep up with friends who are riding hard on traditional mtbs. They ride hard and fast. Sounds like with this it’s more like it only adds the power if you’re pedally g hard. Do you think it would work well for this purpose?

just wondered how to like the front fork and shock on this model? i also have the 9.7 and think they are harsh, i told my bike shop the rear shock is making a knock noise so they sent it to Fox. we shall see how this goes

re noise, i just bought a 9.7EXE and the bottom shock mount bolt is just a basic cap screw, so the clearance to the farme and shock bushing is around 0.2mm which was making a noise every time suspension cycled. i fixed it by making a special oversized bolt. bad design i feel but sorted now

How do you have the motor tuned for Eco, Mid, High? Are you changing the setting or are you setting it and leave it?

at about 100 miles mine started creaking, and by 150 miles it was a good amount worse. Noticed some play in the chainring so I'm pretty sure it's the torque on that lockring. Took it into my LBS today and will pick it up on Monday hopefully all fixed.

Can you elaborate on the clicking sound you're hearing? I'm experiencing creaking in the bottom bracket/motor, I believe... and I put 95~ miles on it in 7 days and it just got worse....

With that being said, I have the 9.7 and did upgrades to it already such as carbon wheels, new seat and the RSL handlebars... I'M IN LOVE WITH THE BIKE, but the creaking almost makes me want to return it.

Where did you get the OEM Maxxis tyres with white logo?

Great review mike. One question for you, what height are you & size on the EXe ? I’m 6’2 but can’t decide on L or XL.
