One thing I didn’t hear you mention in this video but have in the past is some small plyo boxes, they open up a lot of possibilities for me: stand on them with a dip belt for easy belt squats, put my bench on them for seal rows, a platform for my feet for decline push-ups, put one side of my flat bench up and hook my feet under a power rack safety for decline sit-ups, and they can be placed under the weight in cable pulley lifts when the cable isn’t quite the right length which makes setting up several of them easier. You could also use them for their intended purpose of step ups and such too if you want.

This is an incredibly thorough view and honestly very comphrensive. Would love to see another list and guide for those who don't have a rack set up because of small space constraints. eg: do dumbbells then become an essential. Great video

As a home gym enjoyer, I would also recommend getting something that allows you to load weight on calisthenics movements. I just use a sturdy hiking backpack and put dumbbells in there and use it for push ups, pull ups, and dips.

I recently stumbled onto your videos as suggested on YouTube. I like all your videos they are clear and concise. This is your best video yet, its the most informative one on a homegym setup i have seen!

I agree with everything in this video except the part about curl bars. I have used hexbells and they are nice but recently i added curl bars to the mix and my biceps are noticeably more defined and my forearms are much stronger now too.

For cardio dont forget jump ropes, any trampoline or playing pretty much any sport.

For dumbbells due to cost definitely get dumbbell handles for heavier lifts to save money like you said. Get hexbells for light weight (up to 30 or possibly 50lbs) for supersets to save time.

I agree with most of what you have mentioned however, as a cast iron KB user, the ballistic nature of these such as performing the swing, snatch, clean, TGU, etc have increased benefits to improve mobility, agility and stabilisation for the body :) just my subjective opinion of course! I know you can do these with dumbbells but as the weight is distributed differently on KB's you are less prone to injury. Standard lifts I always favour barbell and dumbbells though!

Was just walking out of my gym and a trainer was having a meeting with a client and I heard her tell her client to have chicken and rice and she said she had it everyday lol. There’s definitely some good trainers at my gym but that was insanity to me since it was my first time actually hearing someone say it in person and it being a trainer.

For adjustable dumbbells I LOVE the powerblocks. Super expensive but they go up to 90s been using them for 3 years

Some ideas that I have found useful: My landlord won't allow me to have a full power rack. However, I am allowed to have independent squat stands, which I can move around easily. I do not feel safe back squatting without safety arms on the squat stands, but I can do front and zercher squats. The squat stands are good enough for the standing OHP as well. For bench press, I just use my loadable olympic dumbbell handles (I have the Abmat loadable dumbbell cushions to help "kick" the dumbbells up). I use the doorway frame cheesy pull up bar with olympic rings for inverted rows. Another useful item I have is the shorter Rogue C70S barbell to save space. I just bought an inexpensive vertical barbell holder(Yes4All brand) to save space through vertical storage of my barbell, EZ Curl bar, and Olympic dumbbell handles. I have the "solo tib bar" for tibialis and hip flexor exercises (uses olympic plates and take up minimum space).

I’ve found some pretty cheap kettlebells online and at second hand equipment shops and they are more adaptable then you might think. You can slide your wrist through multiple kettlebells and grab another adding up to some pretty heavy weight. Mostly do that for pulls or split squats. Or with a belt or rope you can loop a couple together.

Jerry rigged my own system for cables but after it started shredding cables faster than me I bought the pulley on pull up bar system you pictured and it was so worth it. Only slightly more expensive than my Jerry rig and so much better. Highly recommended

When Pandemic happened I got my own gear. Your video sums up pretty much my journey. I started with a decent half rack. Added olympic, EZ and hex barbell. Then an adjustable bench and some cheap adjustable dumbells. You can do tons of stuff with this equipment already. Then when the lower back & shoulders pain started to appear I got the ressistance bands, the yoga mat and a cheap roman chair. Now that I have my own house with more space, I got a cable station from costco and looking forward to upgrade to a full rack, fullset of dumbells and maybe a rowing machine.

Got my home gym last year in September. Almost 1 year now since the last time I went to a commercial gym.

i would have put a jump rope in "perfect addition", separate from the cardio machines. they can be so effective as a cardio device, and so cheap and use so little space. and what i like is that you need to actually be focused and coordinated for it to work, it's a test of patience because many people get frustrated, but it's so rewarding bein able to jump non stop for a few minutes, jump like a boxer or rocky balboa or play with the speed and pace, do double unders, etc. it's a pro and a con at the same time. it's easy to hop in a treadmill and watch tiktoks for 40 minutes.

Prices for used stuff is reasonable now - good time to buy - great timing with the video.

Dumbbells, adjustable bench, cable machine(maybe a crossover) these are the most essentials

If space is tight, I highly recommend the X3 Bar or Harambe System. They’re pretty expensive but you essentially get a full gym that fit in a drawer.

Great video. Love the tier list style. You should make others on exercises and nutrition.

I have a home gym in my garage, and what I recommend is:
- Power cage with cables and pull-up bar built-in. Consider going big here and getting a nice, expensive rig because you can set the catch pins in a perfect spot. Cheaper cages don’t let you set the pins perfectly unless you’re lucky.
- Bench
- Barbell
- Bumper plates up to 600 lbs
- Horse Stall mats for the power cage area
- Regular Dumbbells to 50, then adjustable dumbbells for 50-100 lbs each.
- Padded mats for floor work (and so my wife can do yoga on them and feel like my $20K investment somehow benefitted her)
- Peloton and elliptical for varied cardio options
- Bamboo bar (super useful for developing stabilizers)
- Attachments to enable machine exercises via the cable attachments, to include leg curls, leg extensions, tricep pulldowns, cable rows, cable curls, etc. You can do pretty much any machine work with power cage cable attachments
- 2.5 and 5 lb plates, as well as fractional plates
- Pull up assist band for warming up
- Belt, gloves (I don’t like the chalk mess so I wear bitch mittens)
- TV and good speakers if you can afford it. I put this channel on when I do the elliptical pretty often
- Crash pads for deadlifts

A home gym is not an economical investment. It’s an investment for serious lifters with cash who don’t want to waste time dealing with waiting for squat racks and dealing with 21 year old’s making their TikTok’s. The price I paid for my gym is like 2 decades of LA Fitness. So it’s not a cost saving option, it’s a tyrannical government insurance option, as well as a huge time saver.

I ain't never going back to the commercial gym. Working out in your underwear is just too awesome.
