Saving the Dead Sea From Sink Holes

In 1980, aerial footage of the Dead Sea in Israel showed a coastline with not one single sinkhole. Today, that same coastline contains more than 6,000. And while there are sinkholes in other parts of the world, nowhere do they spread as quickly as along the Dead Sea. As the sea’s water levels continue to drop, the phenomenon accelerates. And despite the pressure to do nothing, geologist Eli Raz set out to reverse this trend and save an ecosystem under dire threat.

This story is a part of our Planet Earth series. From mammals to insects and birds to reptiles, we share this great big world with all manner of creatures, large and small. Come with us to faraway places as we explore our great big planet and meet some of its wildest inhabitants.

This guy looks *exactly* like that one weird scientist that's always in disaster movies who dedicated his entire life to the one thing and warns people of the coming catastrophe but nobody believes him until it's too late.

Why argue about whose land it is? The guy was just doing research. We are supposed to work together for the betterment of humanity.

If the freaking ground is falling out then shouldn't more biologists and researchers be checking out the area? Why is it only this one guy he almost died too

0:56 This would be a great place to film a post apocalyptic movie.

The fact that people care more about the palestine-israel politics rather than the dead sea possibly dried out in 2050 saddens me.

That moment when you watch a video narrated in a language that isn't english and you don't need to read the translation to understand anything 😎

Eli raz I'm proud of you, I am from Israel and this is my most beloved place for traveling, if ein gedi is gone, my children will not be able to experience this nature, or my grandchildren, who will need to face the hard reality, that the salt crusted nowhere they are stepping on it was once a sea with so much beauty in it and around it, what ever the cost, you need to save the place, prove to people that the dead sea and ein gedi are in danger, I will do anything I can to help, damn I even think of teaching my class on this thing and I am one of the students myself. So everyone who read this and can help, do it, just, do it

Human beings are turning uncivilsed.

In this video, someone is doing a good deed. But some inhuman people in the comment section are trying to figure out whether the land belongs to Israel or Palestine. #cheapthoughts

Soooo, how is he saving the dead sea from sink holes? I see lots of walking and measuring and lots of talking but what has come from it? What's the answer that he proposes to stop the sink holes?

Its sad that my kids might not be able to experience the dead sea. One of my best memories as a child is going there witb my pa. It was an exauhsting drive but was worth it.

Many of these sinkholes on the shore and underneath the Sea are freshwater springs that have begun popping up, some of the ponds formed already have fish and they are oasis of vegetation and bird life in the desert so this is certainly not all bad, not all change is negative.
