They came from a generation of tough times and tough choices. Tragedy befell them all. Hope to God you never have to live in times and circumstances like they did. May they rest in peace 🇮🇪

Topic suggestion: Thomas Meagher, both Sr & Jr; Senior was the first Catholic mayor of Waterford & emigrated to Canada, where he had a successful business career. The real star is Jr, who was a rebel leader whose death sentence for the 1848 uprising was also commuted to Australian/Tasmanian servitude. He escaped Australia, became a brigadier general in the US civil war, & is considered one of the “founders” of Montana as a US state (ofc the people here already had national borders, govt, etc pre-colonial). He was the first “acting governor” of the Territory, & equally important, he had built up tremendous wealth and power, and put his foot down against rampant anti-Irish bigotry. While the county that bears his name is in Central Montana, he was active in the area south of Butte MT, where 90% of the colonizers were located in the 1860s. On top of that, his death is surrounded by mystery. To this day, Butte MT is the most Irish town in the USA per capita, & Montana has a very special love for Ireland. Many people who celebrate Irish heritage now are 13-25% Irish but it’s easily our favorite country and favorite ethnic background to celebrate. The Irish (& Scots) also intermarried gracefully into the native tribes, with much less disruption & colonizing than other white husbands, as the clan system style of society & governance had only been banned in the last 100 yrs by England, so it was familiar and something that had been taken away. The native people quickly understood that Irish, Scots, Welsh & Cornish (why aren’t they a named group in UK anymore?) had also been colonized & embraced partnerships with them as long as they weren’t being scammed or robbed. There’s a lot of red haired natives, and it’s not from the Scandinavians, who rarely intermarried with native people until more recent years! My late friend Nikki was Blackfeet & 2nd gen Irish, her mom was an immigrant in the 50s, & proudly had two FBI stickers: Full Blooded Indian and Full Blooded Irish. I pointed out the impossibly & she said that’s not how it works when you’re Indian lol! She was right, culturally. It’s a very common combo - not just the mix, but the respect and love of both cultures and recognition for being able to help and support each other as people who shared a very family oriented societal structure. Also the Egan book on him is top quality.

Thanks Davy, may he rest in peace and happiness. Dev has to be admired for 1916 and a lot to answer for in 1949 onwards

After the genocide in 1845-52 when the British starved, murdered and tortured 3 to 5 million Irish to death, stole their land and then called it a potato famine, all because 80% of the Irish owned their own land and were out performing British industry, the Irish were reluctant to help Britain do the same to Germany in WW1. Everything else is just punishment for not falling into line.

If I’m correct the Irish also give a “fuck you” to England royalty but having their hands in their pockets.
