One thing I would maybe change to enhance this is : once you have your selection add a new color fill layer because you can easily pick your color by double clicking on the layer - just might save some time if you need to play with the colors

I mainly use it to achieve a technical white balance. With a 50% gray color fill layer in diference blend mode and a threshold on top, I can find the exact 50% gray pixels, to eyedrop on the curves. The black and white pixels, photoshop can spot in the Auto options on the curves.
