Once I discovered this I've used it all the time to do light and shadow, way easier than shade light and dark. You can play with the lights easier using this technique, good stuff!

So many artists sleep on value and think color is the only way to make their work "good" or "interesting". Value is such a workhorse and is so underrated.

I think the secondary takeaway here is just "have contrast". The "non-multplied" layer has very low contrast, making it look like a weird un-lit 3D asset. Around the darkness of the eyes and nostrils do you start to have enough of it. But once you add the multiply layer, it adds more of that necessary dark value to these un-lit place to make them into shadow because... Un-lit = shadows. The render underneath just fits a shadow better than light. So even if you don't want to make such a dramatic lightning scheme fast, it should be a great thing to practice how to paint in that contrast yourself instead of using layers.

great method! do you have any tips and tricks for adding color to greyscale? I always have trouble and go through multiple layer modes like color, overlay and gradient maps. I just wonder if there's a better alternative?

Hi! Thanks for the tip, I just wanted to be sure, you add a multiply layer, and you just erase the part you want to be enlightened or add another layer for the light ?
