Technically, you would say that it is at least 29 years old. The Latest release of the original NES was in 1987 in some parts of the EU (before BREXIT) and the entirety of Australia. However, the other parts of the EU got it on September 1st, 1986, which I believe was the same release date in the UK.

The Earliest release of the same hardware was in Japan on July 15th, 1983, however, in Japan, the shell of the unit was smaller and coloured differently and marketed as the Family Computer (Famicom). They changed the design of the console was changed for the rest of the world, because in 1983, America was going through "The Video Game Crash" where no one had a video game console and everyone had lost interest since the video games from the likes from Atari were so numerous and yet so terrible in quality and gameplay and Nintendo was going to change that forever. Firstly, the game cartridges were bigger than the Japanese counterpart since they wanted to emulate the feel of a VCR (again: America was going through the Video Game Crash before the NES came out, so they wanted to eliminate the feel of it being a video game console. This was also why you put the cartridges at the front all the way so the contacts of the cartridge touch the connectors on the unit then push the cartridge down.).

The number of PINs on the cartridge was changed from 60 to 72 for the 10-NES Lock-Out Chip, a chip that was both on the game and on the unit. The 10-NES Lock Out chip prevented Pirated games to play on the original hardware and it was also region coding.

Secondly, they wanted to change the design of the console because they didn't want to make a customer to pay ~$250 USD (from 1985) for something that looked like a toy, so they made it larger ("Bigger is better" -Every Stereotypical American Ever) and changed the colour scheme from beige and maroon to two shades of grey and red (some black). to seem futuristic.

Dan was born in 1991 . The Soviet Union collapsed in 1991. The mighty Soviet Union was scared of your face.
