I have become very disappointed with Etsy over the last few years, when they started up you had to have handcrafted items which needed to pass a quality test first to be accepted to sell ! Now, it seems anything can be posted, no matter where it came from, handcrafting not being a requirement anymore. I believe this hurts the people who do spend the time making their items or the ones who find and package items to sell that are needed for others to create handmade items. My purchases are those types of things, so that I can create for friends, family etc.
But Etsy is so large now, last I heard at least 2 million shops, may be more at this point, and it's difficult to find things you are searching for. If I want a hand painted wine glass, searching will show me 50, 000+ shops, normal people cannot spend the time going through all those sites to find an item to purchase.
I don't agree with charging the shops all these extra fees, these people are not making a living off the items they sell because the average sales per month isn't enough to keep you in Raman noodles to eat 3x's a day for the month, going by a breakdown of what Etsy posts as averages.
It's sad that everything comes down to the almighty dollar. Unfortunately very talented people can't make even a small amt ot money trying to compete with 50, 000 other shops...
All the extra costs and fees isn't going to help the small shop crafter, they will just end up closing down, what a disappointment, Etsy isnt looking out for these small shops, only themselves!! I will be researching where to spend my money besides Etsy. I am no longer a fan... I feel sorry for all the people who try so hard and spend so much time creating and get nothing in return!!! Just my point of view but I feel it's full of truth.

I dunno know but 5% is a lot of money! Specially when the platform was crated to encourage crafters, and artisans to start there businesses. If you ask me just another corporation leaching from starving artists.

Thank you for explaining the changes and putting it into perspective! I'm not too freaked out about the fee increase, because somehow they need to pay for their growth. More shoppers means more sales right :D Also, I love your sweater!!!

Shipping FEE - Penalize the many for the bad practices of the few - this is the same stupid philosophy the Ebay did - not buying it! In my world it's called theft - taking a fee without providing a service.

Thank you for being so reasonable about these changes and clearly explaining everything. Love having a steady voice out there!

Traffic and improvements yet to be seen.
In the meantime, a quick daily glance at the Bugs Forums, tell a sad story of a constant mess on the exsisting Site!
Would rather see them put money into a stable platform. Constant changes had severally hurt Businesses.

I did freaked out. I really hope Etsy steps up their game and start bringing more traffic. No matter how many tweaks I do to Etsy SEO, photos etc, if I don't drag traffic to my shop, I really have little organic traffic. And every time I join these Etsy sale events or I make a sale, the weeks after are dead! I understand that Etsy is a business and need to make these changes in order to grow, but most sellers on Etsy are solo traders, small businesses, who are spending precious time keeping up with their constant algorithm changes and tests, instead of spending that time creating! The more Etsy grows ( or aims to), the more they loose the initial vision and model they initially had about craftsmanship... thatts sad...

Very informative video. I had a shop on Esty but didn't devote the time needed. I have been thinking about opening a new shop and this really helped. Thank you for the information.

Thank you for 'breaking down' the new changes on Etsy. Your video was very helpful. I agree about adapting to the new changes instead of freaking out. The world won't stand still and/or stay the same, it is always evolving. Unfortunately, The ones who can't adapt will end up disappearing...

If they were shipping it themselves, that could possibly make logical sense, business sense no. Go after the people charging $99 being a predatory or poor business practice, and shut them down. This is not standard business practice. You are incorrect. I pay taxes on my shipping to the shipper, not Etsy takes taxes on a shipment they don't even handle.

Right now I'm not worried about the changes that Etsy has been making. I hope it's an opportunity for my store as well.
Etsy remains the most affordable marketplace I know of.
I think we should always be ready for change and ready to act. Let's see what happens...

It was a little unnerving but again, it is just the CODB. Nothing more, nothing less. A few tweaks and I'm moving forward.

I think the changes are a good thing. We can't expect to have traffic if nothing changes. I'm looking forward to the new tools and see how they will work out.

Etsy is definitely not a place I will want to be selling on for too long. I will move to using shopify, amazon once I gain some customers which like my products to have them pay less fees as well.

Well Amazon charges like 15% and I do the packaging and shipping no problem here also Etsy has fewer truly hand made items listers just drop ship or list Asian products they are 50 listers for the same Chinese junk Etsy is to suppose to have hand crafted items but it's always about money.
