Join CalMatters in a conversation about Californians losing health insurance every month as the state resumes checking eligibility for Medi-Cal.

About 16 million people in California will be evaluated for eligibility from June 2023 to May 2024 after eligibility checks were put on hold during the COVID-19 pandemic. Some people who lost coverage are no longer eligible, such as starting a job with higher pay. Others might see their coverage lapse because of paperwork mistakes or simply missing a notice in the mail.

If Medi-Cal coverage is lost, there are steps to take to check Medi-Cal status, re-enroll if qualified, find alternate health care, and other options.
