Space Station Live: Hooking Up the New Docking Hardware

The International Space Station is about to get the hardware it needs to be able to greet new spaceships: the International Docking Adapter. NASA Commentator Pat Ryan talks with Sean Kelly, NASA’s senior project manager in the Development Projects Office, about the mechanisms that will be installed on the Pressurized Mating Adapters and make it possible for new commercial crew vehicles, and potentially other spacecraft, to mate to the space station. The first of two IDAs is to be installed during a spacewalk by astronauts Jeff Williams and Kate Rubins in August.

After reading the 120-page International Docking Standard .pdf, I learned that there is redundancy in both the data and power connections. In addition, there's provisions for 2 water connections to be added in the future. Data, power, and water are all unassisted "Plug-N-Play" connections that happen automatically when the visiting vehicle docks with the ISS.

If you really take the time to read and study the document, they are pretty specific about the specifications and they took the best of all the docking systems and forgot the not-so-good ideas. We are finally witnessing collaboration between all the space exploration countries working toward the greater good. All the countries agreed that no one country had a really great design they could design to and agreed to come up with a better alternative. Hence, the birth of the IDS adapter.

It is disappointing that there are no responses from NASA. I was a participant of the logistical team for the S3S reentry at whites sands missile range back in the 80s.

This is an upgrade to the Russian docking adapter used by Soyuz and the Space Shuttle, the upgraded version has data, power, air and provisions for a new US automated docking ability. SpaceX Dragon, and Orbital Sciences' Cygnus will be unaffected since they use berthing adapters. The Boeing CST-100 and SpaceX Dragon V2 are intended to use the International Docking Adapter. Does anyone know what the Dream Chaser Cargo System will use?

Hah, finally I found out why all the western cargo craft are grabbed with robot arm, always thought it was a ridiculous way to dock. They do it so they wouldn't have to buy a docking adapter from Russians! Exception is the European ATV, they did buy the docking adapter from Russians and docked to the Russian side of ISS. So the PMA-s 2 and 3 have not actually been used after shuttle retirement?

Dear NASA... you went up to the Moon, and took samples of the ore up there... I heard theres Gold... If so, wouldnt we have seen many missions there from NASA and private contractors to go mine it?

Also, Ive seen many flights back n forth from the ISS.. how come you can afford these many flights yet not make another simple flight back to the Moon to continue exploration?

Planning a mission to Mars at the moment, but not another mission to the Moon... Can you explain why theres no interest in our huge Moon which can be a simple place to build shelters, bases, livable habitats for scientists and civilians? The U.S. alone has spent plethora amounts of money on less interesting projects... So how come this isnt first on your list to accomplish?
