Overhand Serve For Beach Volleyball Beginners

A lot of beginner beach volleyball players resort to underhand serving simply because they do not yet know how to overhand serve over the net consistently. In this video I go over 4 simple tips that tend to help players to get a consistent overhand serve. Over time, these basics can then be advanced further into powerful float serves as well as topspin serves.

----------------------------------

For people that need more than these 4 tips to learn a consistent overhand serve:

Usually the people that do not find the power to overhand serve the ball over the net, aren't finding the way to get power from your core to the ball. The one cue about the core that I talked about in the video helps enough for some players to make this connection, while some players unfortunately need even more guidance on how to find this. I have planned to make more videos about this in the future, but until they are done, here are two routes you can go to continue your discovery journey:

I love the "high five" tip. It helps the person to get a feeling of what she's supposed to feel during the serve, while also showing where the toss should be. Core strenght it's an aspect that is easily overlooked when we start learning and don't get why the arms feel like wet noodles against the ball instead of crushing it.

@5:31 Great tip! I'm just getting back to beach after having shoulder surgery six months ago and I want to slowly get back to overhand serves. I never even thought about using a fist but it makes sense now that I think about it.

This (4:50) is a really interesting and valuable information!!
Even large channels like Better at Beach do not really say this in their overhead serve videos.

Always, thank you for your great videos. "tricky" is the key word. I've been playing volleyball consistently for 4 yrs using underhand serve because I couldn't get it over the net with overhand. Just recently, I started using overhand serve and it's been going over but mostly short and close to the net. Everyone around me makes overhand look so easy and with power. It's really frustrating. before I heard you mention fist as an option, I've been using it to get more power but it's too loopy. I think it may be the throw or how I hit the ball. My playmates advise that I'm pushing it rather than hitting it. I really want to get better at overhand serve. I will take your advise about the core when I serve.

Funny, when I first started playing (30+ years ago), I was hitting with my fist. #greatMinds
Also, good choice on using the AVP balls ^^

What about a right-hander trying to serve overhand with their left hand? I had rotator cuff repair on my right so have been trying for months but my left hand just doesn't seem good enough. It's certainly strong enough, but I struggle with that left-handed serve.
