Are sidekicks new or recent to D&D? I just started playing this year but they haven’t been brought up in my game

When it comes to the Spellcaster, I wouldn't apply it to a monster/NPC that is already a spellcaster higher than 1st level, as they'd lose access to those spells - better to turn existing "spellcasters" into Experts or Warriors so that they can keep those spells.
