Koba Screen Time - Rise of The Planet of The Apes

After some time, I finally remade my old Koba screen time video.

Koba was a ruthless and dangerous Evolved Bonobo who was a main antagonist in the planet of the apes
Reboot movies. He first appeared in rise of the planet of the apes. He has a small role in the film but he is important as when he is freed by Caesar he assisted in the ape rebellion and after as an anti hero.

So Apes already have a really good memory. And with the intelligence boost with the testing, his memory would have a major boost. It’s likely he was flooded with a lot of past trauma he wouldn’t have processed or remembered before. Or maybe he did recall it all but didn’t quite fully comprehend what was going on. Either way I don’t think Koba before being tested on hated humans in the same way until after his intelligence was boosted. He was likely fearful and hated them in a “they’re always hurting me” sense. But not in the sense of having a desire for revenge brew over in his mind

Koba had the biggest impact in the entire trilogy. Everything that went down in all 3 films was because of him. In Rise, he was responsible for the spread of the virus. In Dawn he was responsible for the conflict between the apes and the humans. In War, even though he’s dead, he was responsible for starting the war. Crazy.

That final scene is what probably triggers some resentment from Koba to Caesar. I know the second movie explores that, but the fact that Caesar protects the same human that experimented with him by throwing Koba to the ground is in my opinion what starts his motivation for power

It's interesting how in a subtle way, everything began here for Koba and Caesar. They are the two halves of the ape apocalypse, with Koba setting the virus free, and Caesar setting the apes free. When Caesar frees Koba, he makes the biggest mistake, that will haunt him till the end of his life. And even here you can kinda see the start of their relationship. Koba clearly sees that Caesar is the one in charge, but kinda goes his own way. And at the bridge, Caesar pretty much gives Maurice and Koba roles as leaders of their groups. Caesar also allows Koba to murder his enemy, thus giving him a taste for revenge. And in the end, he pushes Koba aside to protect a human, quite possibly starting the rift in their relationship, that becomes apparent once humans show up again. While koba barely has under 4 minutes of screentime, everything he does in the sequel, is set up here.

It's like, who would've thought this ape extra would go on to be one of the most integral characters of the later films and become one of the best villains in cinematic history.

I'm happy to see these movies getting more love thanks to the new movie. In terms of great protagonists, Caesar doesn't get enough love. And in terms of tragic villains, Koba doesn't get enough love either.

The restraint to build him up like they did was really something. I kinda wish he would've died in 3 because nothing matched him as a villain in 3. Plus I would've been really interested to see his continued character.
