What is Herpes?
Herpes, also called Herpes Simplex is an infection caused by the Herpes Simplex Virus, of which there are 2 types. Type 1 and 2. Both can cause several distinct medical disorders.
First of all, they can cause oral herpes. This leads to infections in the face and around the mouth, causing a sore throat. It may also result in groups of small blisters, called cold sores.
Next up, herpes can cause blisters and ulcers around the genitals. This is called gential herpes, which may last for 2-4 weeks, causing tingling and shooting pains. Most oftenly this is caused by HSV-2.
Furthermore herpes may also affect someone's hands, eyes and brain. You don’t need to be a doctor, to know that this last two can lead to serious complications. Ultimately causing blindness, permanent brain damage or worse.
Is Herpes incurable?
Unfortunately yes. Herpes basically comes in cycles with short periods of active infections and long periods without symptoms, but here is also some good news. Because over time herpes episodes tend to be less severe and less frequent.
How common is an Herpes infection?
Worldwide between 58-95% of all Adults are infected with either HSV-1 or HSV-2. And usually the lower the socioeconomic status of a community, the higher the Herpes-numbers are.
Tips & tricks:
- Use a condom or dental dams.
- Avoid sexual intercourse or kissing someone with a sore/blisters.
- Avoid having multiple sexual partners.
- Avoid drinking alcohol or using drugs.
- Have regular checkups or STI tests
- Stay in the best shape possible.
- Reduce stress.
- Avoid sunbathing or over-exposure to sunlight.
- Decrease your complaints by applying aloe vera gel to sores.
Treatment:
If one partner has herpes and the other does not, the use of antiviral medication, such as acyclovir, in combination with a condom, could further decrease the risk of getting infected.
The same is true for the anti-HIV drug tenofovir. It is a vaginal gel, that is reported to reduce herpes transmission in women by 51%.
