It takes 2 to 5 years and billions of dollars to make a steel factory in the US. If I were a company, I wouldn’t want to do that knowing that Trump could change his mind with a tariffs on a whim.

People don't seem to understand what "Reciprocal Tariffs" actually means! Whatever another Country charges America for Tariffs, then that is what America charges them for Tariffs. If other Countries want Free Trade and they care about their Own People, then the Logical thing to do would be to charge 0% Tariffs, which would mean the US would charge 0% Tariffs thereby hopefully, facilitating Free Trade! But that would be if Other Countries Leaders understand this concept, which would Help Everyone and if they care about their Own People as well or only pleasing the Elite Oligarch Class that mainly fund their election campaigns...

For those that are confused about tariffs:

The tariff is a tax on the goods produced by the importers, on the importers. That can and probably will result in an increase in the costs of goods they export. While the price does go up, that isnt the tax. That is the exporter trying to buffer the tariff and maintain their profit margin. When the cost goes up, consumers spend less and less on those products. This does two things. It pressures the importers economically, which in turn pressures the admins of the countries theyre exporting from. And, it benefits local competition and incentivizes the exporters to begin production locally. In the long run, that allows for either a) better trade relations or b) cheaper cost of goods, or both. Not in every case but thats the intended effect. This is why TSMC is bringing manufacturing here. That alone is a MASSIVE indication of the effect and utility of the tariffs. How long have they held out in Taiwan despite the looming threat of China?
